Southern Rhône: sunshine, Grenache and great Mediterranean wines
The Southern Rhône represents the sunniest and most Mediterranean expression of the Rhône Valley. Between garrigue, rolled pebbles, limestone hillsides and the mistral wind, the region produces generous, spicy and deeply gastronomic wines.
Led by Grenache, often completed by Syrah and Mourvèdre, the red wines of the Southern Rhône seduce with ripe fruit, sweet spices, thyme, liquorice and garrigue. Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas are two of its most important expressions.
Southern Rhône wines offer a warm, generous and savoury expression. The reds combine ripe fruit, spice, garrigue and enveloping tannins, while the rarer whites stand out for their generous texture and gastronomic character.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas
Châteauneuf-du-Pape remains the emblematic appellation of the Southern Rhône, known for powerful, deep and complex red wines, as well as a few distinctive whites. Gigondas offers a fresher, more structured and spicy expression, shaped by the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Wine style
Red wines from the Southern Rhône are usually fleshy, aromatic and generous. Depending on the appellation, producer and vintage, they may be supple and gourmand, or more structured, deep and suited for cellaring. The best wines retain freshness despite their sunny maturity.
