Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2003 — Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2003 from Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils is a rare and mature cuvée, produced from an ambitious selection within one of the historic estates of the appellation. Marked by a sun-filled, dense and deeply Mediterranean vintage, it expresses generous substance, evolved dark fruit, spice, garrigue and an ample texture now polished by time.
Terroir: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, solar ripeness and depth
Réserve des Deux Frères is one of the most confidential and sought-after cuvées from Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils. It extends the spirit of the Mon Aïeul cuvée in an even more concentrated expression, with rigorous selection, imposing substance and a search for density typical of the great age-worthy wines of the southern Rhône.
The 2003 vintage stands out for its intensely solar character, advanced ripeness and natural power. After more than twenty years of evolution, the wine is now entering a fully mature phase, where its initial richness has melted into more complex notes of candied dark fruits, fig, liquorice, fine leather, cocoa, dried garrigue, balsamic nuances and melted spices.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with mahogany and slight brick reflections, still dense, with visible evolution highlighting the wine’s maturity.
Nose: intense, rich and evolved, with blackberry, blueberry liqueur, crème de cassis, black plum, kirsch, liquorice, roasted meat juices, warm earth, Provençal herbs and a balsamic touch. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, cocoa, blond tobacco, black olive, subtle truffle and dried garrigue may appear.
Palate: ample, voluptuous and highly concentrated, with sun-filled substance now softened by evolution. The tannins are melted, the fruit remains deep and the finish extends through spices, liquorice, garrigue and discreet minerality. A mature, rich and expressive Châteauneuf-du-Pape to open with care.
98/100 — Wine Advocate
Wine Advocate describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2003 from Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils as one of the standout Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines of the vintage. The review highlights a very limited cuvée, close to Mon Aïeul but reinforced by the addition of press wine, giving it an even more concentrated character. The wine reveals a very dense colour and a powerful nose of warm earth, blackberry, blueberry liqueur, crème de cassis, roasted meat juices, Provençal herbs, liquorice and a balsamic note. The palate is voluptuous, very rich, impressively concentrated and remarkably long, with an ageing capacity announced for more than twenty years.
Expression of the 2003 vintage
The 2003 vintage gives this Réserve des Deux Frères a powerful, ripe and deeply Rhône expression. The wine bears the signature of solar years: very ripe dark fruit, enveloping texture, natural richness, warm spices and a clear sense of density. Today, gradual opening is preferable to prolonged decanting, in order to preserve the finesse of its evolution and the balance of the bottle.
In summary: a rare, mature and solar Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2003, awarded 98 points by Wine Advocate, marked by exceptional concentration, voluptuous texture, great aromatic richness and a remarkably long finish.
Food pairings: slow-cooked lamb, matured rib of beef, Provençal beef stew, duck with sweet spices, game, lamb tagine, confit vegetables, truffle-based dishes, garrigue-inspired cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
