Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2009 — Domaine de la Janasse, Magnum
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2009 from Domaine de la Janasse, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, belongs among the great southern Rhône expressions from a warm, rich and generous vintage. Driven by Grenache, this cuvée combines density, dark fruit, spice, liquorice, roasted garrigue and ample texture, with remarkable depth further enhanced by the large format.
Terroir: old vines, Grenache and Châteauneuf-du-Pape depth
Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is one of the major signatures of Domaine de la Janasse. It highlights a selection of old vines, with a high proportion of Grenache, complemented depending on the vintage by Syrah, Mourvèdre and other traditional grape varieties of the appellation. The result is a deep, structured and intensely Mediterranean Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The 2009 vintage gives this wine an opulent, ripe and highly concentrated profile, yet without excessive heaviness. The magnum format encourages slower and more harmonious evolution, preserving fruit freshness, structural integrity and aromatic complexity over time.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution, with fine density still preserved by the magnum format.
Nose: rich, deep and expressive, with blackberry, cassis, blueberry liqueur, black cherry, melted liquorice, incense, acacia flowers, roasted garrigue and sweet spices. With aeration, nuances of truffle, fine leather, cocoa, roasted meat, warm earth and graphite may appear.
Palate: ample, concentrated and silky, with dense, layered and deeply fruity substance. The tannins are ripe and enveloping, the texture remains smooth and generous, while the finish extends through dark fruits, liquorice, spices, garrigue and a subtle mineral dimension.
