Château Margaux — Timeless Icon of the Médoc, the Quintessence of Refinement and Depth
An undisputed symbol of Bordeaux elegance, Château Margaux is one of the five First Growths of the Médoc under the 1855 Classification. Located at the heart of the Margaux appellation, this legendary estate has embodied for centuries the nobility, grace, and precision of the region’s greatest wines.
Owned by the Mentzelopoulos family since 1977, the estate owes its international prestige to Corinne Mentzelopoulos, now joined by her son Alexis and Philippe Bascaules as Managing Director. This leadership blends aristocratic heritage with thoughtful innovation, ensuring exceptional consistency across vintages.
An Exceptional Terroir
The 102-hectare vineyard lies on deep Günzian gravel over a limestone base — a perfectly drained, ideally exposed terroir that gives the wines of Château Margaux their purity, aromatic finesse, density, and remarkable aging potential.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend (around 89% in the Grand Vin), complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. This composition creates a unique balance of structure, floral elegance, and mineral depth.
Viticultural Excellence & Meticulous Precision
Vineyard work is carried out with extraordinary attention to detail, respecting the environment and natural rhythms. Grapes are harvested by hand with rigorous sorting, and each parcel is vinified separately to express the identity of its terroir.
Fermentation takes place in traditional wooden vats, followed by 18 to 24 months of aging in 100% new French oak barrels. This process unfolds in the spectacular underground cellar designed by Norman Foster, a harmonious dialogue between tradition and contemporary architecture.
Style & Signature Wines
The Grand Vin of Château Margaux reveals:
- An intense bouquet of violet, cassis, graphite, and cedar — a signature of its terroir.
- A palate of rare elegance: silky, precise, structured, and remarkably long.
- An exceptional aging potential, capable of evolving gracefully for decades.
The estate also produces:
- Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux — A second wine of exceptional quality, expressing Margaux finesse in a more approachable style.
- Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux — A 100% Sauvignon Blanc of crystalline purity and freshness, among the most distinguished white wines of Bordeaux.
