Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru — The Wild and Noble Soul of Gevrey

Located at the southern entrance of Gevrey-Chambertin, between Ruchottes-Chambertin and Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the oldest and most characterful vineyards of the Côte de Nuits. Covering approximately 8.7 hectares, this historic climat yields deep, complex and racy Pinot Noirs, combining power, minerality and aromatic intensity. The name “Mazis,” meaning small houses in local dialect, evokes the rustic buildings that once dotted the hillside — a perfect reflection of the wine’s vibrant and earthy personality.

Terroir

Mazis-Chambertin is divided into two complementary zones: Mazis-Hauts, with stony limestone soils producing taut, structured wines, and Mazis-Bas, with deeper clay soils giving richer, more generous wines. This duality lends the cru a rare complexity, balancing tension and breadth. Its eastern exposure and excellent drainage promote slow, even ripening, ensuring a naturally harmonious structure.

Style & Personality

Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru wines offer a rich and evolving aromatic palette. In their youth, they display vivid notes of blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry, layered with subtle spice and floral undertones. With age, the bouquet develops into more complex aromas of licorice, cocoa bean, mocha, leather and truffle. On the palate, the wine stands out with its firm yet elegant structure, velvety tannins and a long, persistent finish. Its ageing potential ranges from 15 to 30 years depending on the vintage.
