Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Reine des Bois 2001 — Domaine de la Mordorée
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Reine des Bois 2001 from Domaine de la Mordorée is a rare and prestigious bottle from one of the estate’s most emblematic cuvées. Driven by a Grenache-dominant blend, this wine combines concentration, depth, aromatic richness and structure in an expression that is now mature yet still remarkably intense.
Terroir: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, old vines and great concentration
Cuvée La Reine des Bois represents one of the most ambitious expressions of Domaine de la Mordorée. Produced from low yields and old vines, it offers a dense, structured and deeply Mediterranean vision of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with rich substance, great fruit intensity and significant ageing capacity.
The 2001 vintage produced a wine of rare power, described by the historic critical review as more structured and concentrated than previous great vintages of the cuvée. Today, its initial richness has been polished by time, revealing deeper complexity around dark fruits, kirsch, liquorice, truffle, graphite, spices and garrigue.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution, still showing remarkable density for a mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Nose: deep, intense and complex, with blackberry, cassis, kirsch, candied dark fruits, graphite, liquorice, truffle, noble charcoal, sweet spices and garrigue. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, roasted meat, warm earth, dried flowers and Mediterranean undergrowth may appear.
Palate: ample, dense and multidimensional, with impressive concentration, generous texture and structure that remains clearly present. The tannins are integrated by evolution, the acidity is well absorbed, and the finish is long, deep and persistent, driven by dark fruits, liquorice, spices and beautiful tertiary complexity.
100/100 — Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Robert Parker describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Reine des Bois 2001 from Domaine de la Mordorée as an exceptional cuvée, tasted several times and awarded a perfect score. His review highlights a wine even superior to the great previous vintages of the cuvée, with a very deep colour and a bouquet of graphite, blackberry, kirsch, liquorice, truffle and noble charcoal. The palate is full-bodied, pure, dense, generous and remarkably concentrated, with acidity, tannins and alcohol perfectly integrated. A true modern legend of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, produced in limited quantity and built for long ageing.
Expression of the 2001 vintage
The 2001 vintage gives this Reine des Bois a powerful, structured and now beautifully evolved expression. The wine retains great density, while time has brought greater softness, complexity and aromatic depth. Gradual opening is recommended, with gentle aeration rather than prolonged decanting, in order to preserve the finesse of its evolution and the precision of the fruit that remains present.
In summary: a rare, mature and mythical Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée La Reine des Bois 2001, awarded 100 points by Robert Parker, marked by exceptional concentration, remarkable aromatic depth and great evolved complexity.
Food pairings: slow-cooked lamb, matured rib of beef, Provençal beef stew, roast pigeon, duck with sweet spices, game, roasted vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, garrigue-inspired cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
