Álvaro Palacios Estate – Priorat, Spain

Álvaro Palacios, born in Alfaro (Rioja) to a renowned winemaking family, is one of the key figures who transformed the landscape of Spanish fine wine. After studying oenology in Bordeaux and working at Château Pétrus, he returned to Spain with a bold vision: to revive the forgotten potential of Priorat, a dramatic region of steep hillsides and slate soils. In 1990, he established his estate in Gratallops, breathing new life into old Garnacha and Cariñena vines.

An Exceptional Terroir: The Power of Slate

The Priorat DOCa in southern Catalonia is a mountainous region of terraced vineyards rooted in licorella — black slate soils that reflect sunlight and store heat. These nutrient-poor, mineral-rich soils force vines to dig deep, producing grapes of exceptional concentration, aromatic intensity, and minerality.

The interplay of altitude, exposure, and a Mediterranean climate creates wines of great power, freshness, and depth.

A Philosophy of Excellence

Palacios applies a precise, artisanal approach based on low yields, manual harvesting, and rigorous parcel selection. Maturation in French oak barrels enhances texture and purity without overshadowing terroir. Each cuvée expresses its origin with remarkable clarity — powerful yet refined, rich yet vibrant.

Signature Wines

  • L’Ermita — The estate’s legendary flagship wine, crafted from century-old Garnacha vines rooted in steep slate slopes. Profound, mineral, and long-lived — a benchmark for Spanish fine wine.
  • Finca Dofí — A single-vineyard expression dominated by Grenache, with a touch of Syrah or Cabernet. Structured, elegant, and full of aromatic tension.
  • Les Terrasses — A blend of old vines from multiple Priorat villages, showcasing balance, generosity, and terroir-driven character.
  • Camins del Priorat — The gateway wine, approachable yet true to the Palacios signature of finesse and freshness.
  • Other projects: Descendientes de J. Palacios in Bierzo (Mencía grape) and Palacios Remondo in Rioja (Garnacha).

Style and Recognition

Palacios wines combine Mediterranean richness with European finesse. Their hallmark lies in a silky texture, vivid minerality, and complex aromatics — black fruits, violets, graphite, and spice.

L’Ermita is consistently rated among the world’s greatest wines (98–100 points Parker), standing as a symbol of the modern renaissance of Spanish fine wine.
