Échezeaux Grand Cru — A Legendary Grand Cru in the Heart of the Côte de Nuits

Located in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, between Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot, Échezeaux is one of the most emblematic Grands Crus of Burgundy. Classified as a Grand Cru AOC since 1937, it covers nearly 35 hectares, divided into a mosaic of climats and producers.

This historic terroir of exceptional geological richness gives birth to Pinot Noirs of power and sensuality, combining the depth of Vosne-Romanée with the structure of Clos de Vougeot. Échezeaux is one of the rare crus capable of expressing a wide range of styles depending on the producer, revealing many faces of great red Burgundy.

Vineyard & Parcel Structure

  • Total surface: 34.79 hectares
  • Grape variety: 100% Pinot Noir
  • Commune: Flagey-Échezeaux
  • Altitude: 250–300 meters
  • Authorized yield: 35 hl/ha
  • Minimum planting density: 9,000 vines/ha

The vineyard is fragmented into 11 official climats, including Les Rouges du Bas, En Orveaux, Les Loächausses, Les Poulaillères, Les Cruots – Vignes Blanches and Les Champs Traversins. This diversity explains the wide variation in quality from one producer to another — some Échezeaux reaching the heights of the best Vosne-Romanée, others showing a simpler expression.

Terroir & Geology

The slopes of Échezeaux face east to southeast, benefiting from ideal sunlight and the natural protection of the Côte de Nuits combes. The clay-limestone soils — more calcareous at the top and more clay-rich at the bottom — ensure excellent drainage and slow, even ripening of the grapes.

This alternation between limestone finesse and clay depth gives the wines a firm structure and typical aromatic complexity, which time refines into even greater elegance.

Viticulture & Winemaking

Viticultural practices favor low yields, manual harvesting, and rigorous berry sorting. Traditional Burgundian vinification focuses on preserving fruit, controlling extraction, and patient aging in French oak barrels (often 30 to 60% new oak, depending on the estate’s style).

The great producers — including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Mongeard-Mugneret, Faiveley, Gros Frère et Sœur, Joseph Drouhin and Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair — craft cuvées of depth, seduction, and remarkable length.

Style & Tasting Profile

Échezeaux wines are characterized by controlled power, broad texture, and a long mineral backbone. The bouquet reveals black cherry, strawberry, peony, sweet spices, and undergrowth, with touches of truffle and fine leather as they mature.

On the palate, they combine body, freshness, and velvety texture, with a long, vibrant finish. Well-crafted Échezeaux reach their peak between 10 and 20 years depending on the vintage, and can continue to evolve beautifully for over 30 years.

Position & Prestigious Neighbors

  • North: Grands Échezeaux — more homogeneous and often more structured
  • East: Clos de Vougeot
  • South: Vosne-Romanée terroirs
  • West: Chambolle-Musigny slopes

This strategic location makes Échezeaux a crossroads of styles, blending the strength of Vougeot with the seductive finesse of Vosne-Romanée.

An Appellation of Expression and Diversity

Far from being monolithic, Échezeaux is a plural Grand Cru, reflecting the winemaker’s hand as much as the terroir. Between geological rigor, climatic nuance, and human savoir-faire, it offers a unique emotional range where elegance and intensity come together in the purest Burgundian tradition.
