Tokaji — The Legendary Sweet Wine of Hungary

Tokaji (often called Tokay in older texts) is a legendary wine with over 400 years of history. Alongside Champagne, it is one of the few wines to have inspired countless anecdotes and helped shape the prestige of European fine wines. According to tradition, Tokaji Aszú — the sumptuous sweet wine made from botrytized grapes — was the first wine in history to be deliberately crafted from grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), laying the foundation for some of the world’s greatest dessert wines.

A Unique Sweetness: The “Puttonyos” System

The sugar content of Tokaji wines is traditionally expressed in puttonyos, a centuries-old classification indicating sweetness level:

  • 3 to 6 puttonyos — ranging from lusciously sweet to extraordinarily rich (up to 150 g/L of residual sugar)
  • Minimum aging: 3 years, often much longer for top cuvées

At the pinnacle stands Tokaji Eszencia, the most opulent expression of the region. So concentrated and naturally sweet that it barely ferments, Eszencia has a nectar-like texture and incense-like aromatic persistence that lingers for minutes. It is one of the rarest and most revered wines in the world.

Beyond Sweetness: Furmint, Hungary’s Great Dry Wine

While Tokaji Aszú is world-famous for its sweetness, the region also produces exceptional dry wines from Furmint, Hungary’s signature grape variety. Often compared to Chardonnay for its structure and elegance, dry Furmint wines are intense, mineral, and fragrant, with remarkable aging potential.

This dual identity — legendary sweet wines and world-class dry whites — makes Tokaj one of the most fascinating wine regions in Europe.
