Nestled in the southern reaches of Burgundy, Mercurey stands as the beating heart of the Côte Chalonnaise. Celebrated since the early 20th century for its generous Pinot Noir and refined Chardonnay, it offers a harmonious union of terroir, tradition and accessibility. For wine lovers seeking authentic Burgundian character without the stratospheric prices of the Côte d’Or’s famous crus, Mercurey remains an exceptional destination.
Officially recognized as an appellation in 1923, Mercurey covers approximately 650 hectares of vineyards — making it one of the largest appellations in Burgundy. Around 85% of plantings are Pinot Noir, with the remaining 15% in Chardonnay.
The vines thrive on well-drained clay-limestone soils with diverse exposures and altitudes (230–320 m). A continental climate — warm summers, cold winters and marked diurnal shifts — promotes slow, balanced ripening and vibrant aromatics.
This marriage of soil, exposure and climate yields wines combining structure, freshness and aromatic depth, with both youthful charm and reliable cellaring potential.
Mercurey reds are renowned for their velvety texture and vibrant fruit, offering a captivating expression of Pinot Noir that gracefully bridges youthful exuberance and mature complexity.
Though less well-known than the reds, Mercurey’s whites increasingly command attention for their clarity, elegance and gastronomic versatility.
Mercurey boasts 32 Premier Cru climats, each revealing distinct nuances of terroir. Among them, Clos du Roy stands out for its structured, age-worthy reds that rival some of the Côte d’Or’s celebrated crus.
These carefully delineated sites underscore the appellation’s diversity — from airy, floral expressions to deeper, more powerful interpretations of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Mercurey combines time-honored Burgundian craft with modern precision. Many domaines champion sustainable or organic farming, moderate yields, and low-intervention cellar work to highlight terroir transparency — gentle extractions for reds, careful élevage and finely judged oak for both colors.
A dynamic new generation of vignerons has helped elevate quality, reinforcing Mercurey’s reputation on the international stage.
Born of limestone and sunlight, Mercurey captures the timeless elegance of Burgundy in wines that speak with clarity, depth and charm.
