Northern Rhône Valley — Controlled Power and Terroir Purity

Stretching from Vienne to Valence, the Northern Rhône Valley is one of France’s most historic and revered wine regions. This is where Syrah finds its purest expression on steep, terraced slopes overlooking the Rhône River. The region is famous for its intense, structured and deep red wines, as well as for its rare and elegant whites made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.

The vineyard area spans approximately 70 kilometers and includes eight major appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Château-Grillet, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, and Saint-Péray.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

The Northern Rhône is dominated by three iconic grape varieties:

  • Syrah (red) — the only red grape, producing dense, peppery, elegant wines that combine power with freshness.
  • Viognier (white) — grown exclusively in Condrieu and Château-Grillet, offering rich aromas of yellow fruit and flowers.
  • Marsanne & Roussanne (white) — found in Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Saint-Péray, they produce ample, complex wines with excellent ageing potential.

The reds combine power, precision, and freshness, while the whites deliver texture, complexity, and refinement.

Terroir and Climate

The Northern Rhône is a vineyard of steep slopes, where vines grow in granite, schist, or sandy soils, depending on the area. The temperate continental climate, influenced by the Mistral wind, keeps the vines healthy and preserves the purity of the grapes. This spectacular geography, combined with demanding manual viticulture, gives rise to wines of strong character and emotion.

Major Appellations

  • Côte-Rôtie — finesse and depth of Syrah, often blended with a touch of Viognier.
  • Condrieu & Château-Grillet — the purest and most noble expression of Viognier, combining richness and minerality.
  • Hermitage — legendary power and ageing potential, a terroir of prestige.
  • Crozes-Hermitage — generous and accessible, offering a perfect balance of fruit and structure.
  • Saint-Joseph — supple, balanced, and floral elegance.
  • Cornas — Syrah in its most intense and wild expression.
  • Saint-Péray — fresh, refined white and sparkling wines.

Style and Ageing Potential

Northern Rhône reds are deep, velvety, and linear, showing notes of blackberry, cassis, pepper, violet, and leather, supported by firm yet noble tannins. The whites are sensual, complex, and floral, developing aromas of honey, dried fruits, and white flowers with age. The finest crus can age for several decades.

Essence of the Northern Rhône

The Northern Rhône is the meeting point of granite strength, Syrah purity, and the signature of the wind. It is a land of artisans and passion, where vines cling to the rock to produce authentic, profound, and vibrant wines — among the greatest in France.
