Weingut Kühling-Gillot – The Soul of the Roter Hang, Rheinhessen
Nestled in Bodenheim at the heart of Rheinhessen, Weingut Kühling-Gillot channels the finesse and depth of the legendary Roter Hang, the striking red-slate hillside that tumbles towards the Rhine. Founded in the 19th century and today led by Carolin Spanier-Gillot alongside her husband Hans Oliver Spanier (Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier), the estate stands as a benchmark for biodynamic viticulture and site-transparent Rieslings.
A Legendary Terroir: The Roter Hang
The estate’s ~25 ha of vineyards sweep between Nierstein and Nackenheim on steep, south-facing slopes of iron-rich red slate. The Rhine’s reflective power and constant air movement promote slow, even ripening and a singular, saline-mineral precision.
Kühling-Gillot farms some of Germany’s most fabled VDP.Grosses Gewächs sites: Rothenberg, Pettenthal, Hipping, Ölberg and Orbel. Their wines radiate crystalline purity, tensile energy and remarkable depth.
Biodynamics as a Philosophy
Certified biodynamic since the mid-2000s, the estate focuses on soil vitality, biodiversity, and balanced canopies. In the cellar, the mantra is minimal intervention:
- Spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts
- Extended lees aging in traditional Stückfass and Doppelstück oak casks
- Judicious sulfuring; no cosmetic fining that would blur terroir detail
The result is a portfolio that translates site and season with striking clarity and electric minerality.
Signature Wines
- Nackenheim Rothenberg GG — Iconic dry Riesling (often from ungrafted vines); profound, saline, compact and long-lived.
- Nierstein Pettenthal GG — Taut and vertical; citrus peel, warm stone and smoky slate nuances.
- Hipping GG — More aerial and floral; filigree fruit over a chiseled mineral spine.
- Ölberg GG — Structured, textural and chalk-tinged; breadth without heaviness.
- Qvinterra Riesling Trocken — Precision and charm in an estate introduction, blending multiple red-slate sites.
Select Pinot Noir bottlings from the Bodenheim slopes provide a fine-grained, fresh counterpoint to the Rieslings.
Recognition
A proud member of the VDP, Kühling-Gillot is regularly lauded by Gault & Millau, Falstaff, Vinum, James Suckling and Vinous. Rothenberg GG frequently places among Germany’s top dry Rieslings, with peak scores approaching 98 points depending on the vintage.
Precision and Life in Every Glass
