Located to the west of Libourne, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, the Canon-Fronsac appellation shares its origins and terroir with its sister appellation Fronsac, yet it stands out for its finesse and growing reputation.
With barely 280 hectares of vineyards, Canon-Fronsac produces refined and structured red wines, often compared to those of Pomerol for their supple texture and depth.
The region’s rolling hills, facing south and west, benefit from a mild microclimate and exceptional soils composed of limestone, blue clay, and gravelly sands. This geological diversity allows the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness while preserving remarkable freshness and aromatic precision.
The vineyards are dominated by Merlot (about 75%), complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
This blend produces wines of elegance and harmony, combining the roundness of Merlot with the structure and aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc.
Tasting profile:
Color: Deep ruby with garnet reflections as it ages.
Nose: Aromas of ripe red and black fruits (cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant), violet, licorice, and sometimes truffle.
Palate: Ample, silky texture, polished tannins, and a long, balanced finish.
Canon-Fronsac wines are known for their balance between structure and elegance, offering outstanding value for money and excellent aging potential.
A handful of producers have elevated the reputation of this historic appellation:
Château Canon
Château de La Dauphine
Château Moulin Pey-Labrie
Château Haut-Carles
Château Gaby
These estates craft wines that showcase both modern precision and traditional charm, emphasizing purity of fruit and finesse over excessive power.
The wines of Canon-Fronsac pair beautifully with refined dishes such as:
Roasted duck breast with figs
Beef Wellington or veal tenderloin
Guinea fowl stuffed with wild mushrooms
Aged cheeses like Saint-Nectaire or Cantal
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to fully reveal their aromas and velvety mouthfeel.
