Giuseppe Rinaldi — The traditional soul of Barolo

Giuseppe Rinaldi is one of the most respected names in Barolo, at the heart of the Langhe hills. The domaine embodies a deeply traditional vision of Nebbiolo, built on patience, terroir transparency and an uncompromising fidelity to long, classic ageing in large casks.

Today led by Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi, daughters of the late Giuseppe “Beppe” Rinaldi, the domaine continues a legacy of rare integrity. Its wines do not seek immediate impact or stylistic demonstration, but a precise, profound and enduring expression of Barolo’s great crus.

The spirit of the domaine

Giuseppe Rinaldi embodies a Barolo of tradition, restraint and truth. The wines favour the finesse of Nebbiolo, slow aromatic development, noble tannins and the natural energy of the crus, without new oak or stylistic embellishment.

History

Founded in the early 20th century, Domaine Giuseppe Rinaldi became one of the great guardians of classic Barolo. Beppe Rinaldi, a charismatic and fiercely independent figure, spent his life defending an approach rooted in authenticity, slowness and respect for the memory of place.

Since his passing in 2018, Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi have continued this path with the same exacting spirit. The domaine remains associated with a rare idea of wine: an artisanal, sensitive and deeply Piedmontese expression, where each bottle seems to carry both family history and the voice of the crus.

Terroir

The domaine works around 6 hectares spread across several emblematic Barolo crus, including Brunate, Le Coste, Cannubi San Lorenzo and Ravera. These historic slopes, with calcareous clay soils and varied exposures, give Nebbiolo depth, energy and great complexity.

At Rinaldi, terroir always takes precedence over technique. Vineyard work is manual, attentive and inspired by an organic approach, with the aim of preserving soil life and the personality of each parcel. Traditional blending then allows the Barolo wines to gain balance, nuance and impressive longevity.

Viticulture and vinification

The vineyards are worked with restrained intervention. Yields are kept limited, harvests are carried out by hand and the grapes are carefully selected in order to preserve aromatic purity, tannin quality and the natural balance of Nebbiolo.

Vinification remains resolutely traditional: spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, long macerations and extended ageing in large old casks. No demonstrative new oak marks the wines. Patience, precision and the absence of artifice give the cuvées their firm structure, vibrant freshness and remarkable ageing potential.

Wine style

The wines of Giuseppe Rinaldi are marked by noble austerity in youth, fine tannins and the ability to reveal themselves slowly. They combine the power of Nebbiolo with great restraint, in a style that is more profound than spectacular.

With age, aromas of cherry, dried rose, tar, damp earth and fine spices evolve towards truffle, noble leather, tobacco, undergrowth and balsamic notes. These are contemplative Barolo wines, built for lovers of classic, complex bottles deeply rooted in their terroir.

Emblematic cuvées

Barolo Brunate – Le Coste: a legendary cuvée from two historic crus, profound, structured and built for long ageing.

Barolo Tre Tine: a blend of great terroirs such as Cannubi San Lorenzo, Ravera and Le Coste, more floral, airy and refined.

Langhe Nebbiolo: an elegant introduction to the domaine’s spirit, expressing the finesse of the grape in a more accessible register.

Barbera d’Alba: an expressive, deep and lively wine, driven by fruit, natural acidity and the sincerity of the Rinaldi style.

Dolcetto d’Alba: a more immediate, generous and authentic cuvée, true to the everyday tradition of the Langhe.

Cellaring and food pairings

The great Barolo wines of Giuseppe Rinaldi are designed for cellaring. Depending on the vintage, they can evolve for several decades, gaining harmony, aromatic finesse and textural depth while retaining their original drive.

They pair ideally with braised meats, game, truffle risotto, pasta with ragù, mushrooms, mature cheeses and autumnal cuisine with deep flavours. Their noble tannic structure calls for characterful dishes, but without excessive heaviness.
