Flagey-Échezeaux — A Legendary Terroir in the Heart of the Côte de Nuits

Located in the prestigious Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, Flagey-Échezeaux is an emblematic wine-growing commune whose reputation rests on two exceptional Grands Crus: Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux. These legendary terroirs produce red wines of remarkable finesse, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, embodying the nobility and depth of Burgundy at its finest.

A Terroir of Exceptional Geological Richness

The terroir of Flagey-Échezeaux rests on classic Burgundian limestone and marl soils, situated at an altitude of 260 to 300 meters. Their iron-rich composition gives them a characteristic reddish hue, a sign of mineral complexity. This geological diversity — Comblanchien limestone, Prémeaux limestone, and Bajocian marl — contributes directly to the structure and aromatic complexity of the wines.

The soil profile changes with the slope: shallow and stony at the top, more clay-rich at the bottom, giving each parcel its own unique personality. This subtle balance between minerality and matter gives the wines tension and remarkable depth.

Échezeaux Grand Cru — Elegance and Aromatic Charm

Échezeaux covers nearly 35 hectares and is divided into 11 distinct climats, each bringing a subtle signature to the wines. These wines are celebrated for their elegance and freshness, with an aromatic palette defined by:

  • Red fruits: raspberry, cherry, wild strawberry
  • Floral notes: violet, peony
  • Spicy and earthy nuances that deepen with age

Soft, charming, and well-structured, Échezeaux wines have an excellent aging potential of 10 to 15 years, while remaining approachable in their youth.

Grands Échezeaux Grand Cru — Power and Depth

More limited in size, Grands Échezeaux covers around 9 hectares. This exceptional terroir produces wines of greater concentration, combining aromatic intensity with remarkable structure. Their profile is characterized by:

  • Intense black fruits
  • Noble spices
  • Pronounced minerality and a long, persistent finish

Grands Échezeaux wines are more structured than Échezeaux and offer an extended aging potential of over 20 years. With time, they develop great depth and intensity, making them an essential reference for Burgundy enthusiasts.

An Iconic Burgundian Terroir

Thanks to the unique character of its soils, its precise vineyard boundaries, and the nobility of Pinot Noir, Flagey-Échezeaux perfectly embodies the soul of Burgundian viticulture. The Grands Crus Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux rank among the world’s most sought-after appellations for their ability to combine finesse, intensity, and complexity — a true signature of Burgundy’s greatest terroirs.
