Seña – The Sign of Chilean Fine Wine
Seña stands as one of Chile’s most prestigious wine estates and a symbol of the country’s rise on the world stage of fine wine. Founded in 1995 by Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi, Seña was Chile’s first “icon wine” — a visionary project proving that Chile could produce world-class wines of identity, precision, and elegance.
In 2005, Eduardo Chadwick took full ownership of the estate, marking a new era defined by refinement, sustainability, and pioneering biodynamic viticulture. The name Seña — “the sign” — embodies this historic moment: the emergence of Chilean fine wine on the global stage.
Terroir – A Unique Aconcagua Expression
The estate is located in the Aconcagua Valley, just north of Santiago. Its 42 hectares of vineyards are planted on rolling hills cooled by Pacific breezes.
- Soils: clay, schist, and volcanic gravel — ensuring excellent drainage and natural minerality.
- Climate: Mediterranean, with warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness while preserving vibrant acidity.
- Farming: cultivated biodynamically since 2005 to capture the purest expression of its Chilean terroir.
Grape Varieties & Winemaking
Seña is crafted in a Bordeaux-inspired style, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged for approximately 22 months in French oak barrels, gaining aromatic complexity, balance, and textural finesse without masking its natural elegance.
Tasting profile: layers of dark fruit, cedar, graphite, spice, and cocoa, framed by silky tannins and a mineral backbone. Its structure and balance allow it to age gracefully for more than 20 years.
Signature Vintages & Recognition
- Seña — the flagship blend, showcasing Aconcagua’s distinctive character.
- Seña Vertical Collection — a limited edition featuring landmark vintages.
- Notable Years: 2015 and 2018 (both 100 pts by James Suckling), 2021 (highly rated by international critics).
In the historic Berlin Tasting 2004, Seña and Viñedo Chadwick were blind-tasted alongside Bordeaux First Growths and Super Tuscans — and ranked among the top wines, redefining Chile’s position in the world of fine wine.
