This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2007 from Domaine de la Barroche embodies a rare, sun-filled and deeply refined expression of Grenache. Sourced from very old vines, this confidential cuvée highlights fruit purity, velvety texture and the aromatic finesse of a great Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in one of the most opulent and sought-after vintages of the southern Rhône.
Terroir: old vines, Grenache and Châteauneuf-du-Pape finesse
Cuvée Pure is one of the most delicate and sought-after expressions from Domaine de la Barroche. It reveals Grenache’s ability to produce wines of great depth without losing finesse, with ample substance, silky tannins and a particularly pure aromatic expression.
The 2007 vintage brings exceptional ripeness, generous fruit richness and an enveloping texture. In this cuvée, the sun-filled power of the southern Rhône remains balanced by Grenache finesse, supple tannins and remarkable persistence. It is a wine of pleasure, depth and ageing potential, now entering a beautiful phase of maturity.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution, still showing remarkable density for a mature wine.
Nose: generous, pure and intensely Mediterranean, with black cherry, kirsch, ripe dark fruits, lavender, roasted meats, truffle, garrigue, liquorice and sweet spices. With aeration, nuances of cocoa, fine leather, warm earth, dried herbs and candied fruit may appear.
Palate: ample, velvety and deeply expressive, with sun-filled richness perfectly melted into a silky texture. The fruit remains generous, the tannins are polished by evolution, and the finish extends through garrigue, spices, liquorice and discreet minerality, in a style that is opulent, vibrant and elegant.
99/100 — Jeb Dunnuck
Jeb Dunnuck describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2007 from Domaine de la Barroche as the most decadent and concentrated version of this cuvée produced up to that point. His review highlights a thick, hedonistic and spectacular wine, driven by generous aromas of kirsch, dark fruits, roasted meats, lavender and truffle. The palate is massive and still profound, with a rich, layered mid-palate, yet the wine retains a sense of freshness, lightness and vitality. A monumental expression of Grenache, at once opulent, pure and remarkably alive.
Expression of the 2007 vintage
The 2007 vintage gives this Cuvée Pure a particularly generous expression, marked by Grenache ripeness, fruit depth and an almost sensual texture. Today, the wine still combines the brightness of red and dark fruits with more evolved notes of fine leather, cocoa, subtle truffle, dried garrigue, melted spices and warm earth. Measured aeration will reveal its full complexity without weakening its balance.
In summary: a rare, opulent and deeply refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2007, awarded 99 points by Jeb Dunnuck, driven by the richness of the vintage, Grenache purity, velvety texture and beautiful evolved complexity.
Food pairings: slow-cooked lamb, matured rib of beef, roast pigeon, duck with sweet spices, lamb tagine, Provençal beef stew, confit vegetables, truffle-based dishes, garrigue-inspired cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
