Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2001 — Château Rayas
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2001 from Château Rayas belongs among the most singular and sought-after wines of the southern Rhône. Made from Grenache, it expresses the inimitable Rayas style: rare aromatic depth, delicate texture, restrained power and an almost Burgundian elegance in its interpretation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Terroir: Rayas, Grenache and Châteauneuf-du-Pape finesse
Château Rayas holds a unique place in the appellation. Far from the most powerful or demonstrative expressions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate favours a more airy, subtle and deeply personal reading of Grenache, producing wines capable of combining aromatic intensity, transparency, silky texture and great ageing potential.
The 2001 vintage now offers a mature, refined and complex expression. The wine retains the depth of Rayas Grenache while developing more evolved nuances of candied red fruits, kirsch, sweet spices, dried flowers, fine garrigue, delicate leather and Mediterranean undergrowth.
Tasting notes
Appearance: evolved garnet with dark ruby and slight brick reflections, showing the delicate transparency typical of great mature Grenache.
Nose: deep, floral and delicately evolved, with raspberry, red cherry, sweet kirsch, crushed strawberry, dried petals, sweet spices, garrigue and fine liquorice. With aeration, nuances of undergrowth, blood orange, warm earth, blond tobacco and dried herbs may appear.
Palate: medium-bodied, lively and fresh, with more structure and depth than the 2000 vintage. The wine is precise, delicate and still marked by fine aromatic authority, carried by kirsch, raspberry, spices and a long, subtle and persistent finish.
92/100 — Wine Advocate
Robert Parker describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2001 from Château Rayas as more structured and slightly deeper in colour than the 2000 vintage. His review highlights greater acidity and depth, with aromas of raspberry and sweet kirsch. The palate is medium-bodied, very fresh, lively and energetic, with fine flavour authority. An expression of Rayas driven by terroir, freshness and Grenache precision.
Expression of the 2001 vintage
The 2001 vintage gives this Rayas a now fully refined expression, where the original depth has softened into more delicate complexity. The wine can offer a superb mature reading of Grenache, between evolved red fruits, kirsch, floral notes, sweet spices, fine leather and undergrowth. Gradual opening is recommended, with gentle aeration rather than prolonged decanting.
In summary: a rare and mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2001 from Château Rayas, awarded 92 points by Wine Advocate, marked by freshness, Grenache finesse, raspberry and kirsch aromas, and a deeply singular elegance.
Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with sweet spices, slow-cooked lamb, veal with morels, truffled poultry, roasted vegetables, mushroom-based dishes, garrigue-inspired cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
