Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2007 — Domaine de la Janasse, Magnum

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2007 from Domaine de la Janasse, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, belongs among the historic great successes of the estate. Made from a Grenache-dominant blend, sourced from old vines aged from 60 to over 100 years, it combines sun-filled power, spectacular concentration, remarkable freshness and an exceptionally long finish.

Terroir: old vines, Grenache and Châteauneuf-du-Pape depth

Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is one of the most sought-after expressions from Domaine de la Janasse. The very old vines bring dense substance, great depth of fruit and a structure capable of evolving over decades, while preserving the generous, spicy and Mediterranean signature of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The 2007 vintage, sun-filled and exceptionally ripe in the southern Rhône, gives this wine rare breadth. The magnum format further enhances its appeal, encouraging slower evolution, better preservation of freshness and a particularly desirable collector’s dimension.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet with purple, mahogany and brick reflections depending on evolution, dense, brilliant and still sustained in well-preserved large formats.

Nose: spectacular and intensely Mediterranean, with spring flowers, crème de cassis, blackberry, boysenberry, black plum, fig, kirsch, liquorice, truffle and spices. With aeration, nuances of garrigue, tapenade, fine leather, cocoa, blond tobacco and warm earth may appear.

Palate: massive, ample and deeply concentrated, yet carried by remarkable freshness. The substance is impressive, precise and velvety, with ripe tannins, perfectly integrated richness and an immense, spicy, mineral and persistent finish that carries the wine with rare intensity.

Expert review

100/100 — Wine Advocate

Robert Parker describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2007 from Domaine de la Janasse as a perfect wine, tasted on four occasions. His review highlights a Grenache-dominant blend from old vines aged from 60 to over 100 years, with spectacular aromas of spring flowers, crème de cassis, blackberry, boysenberry, liquorice, truffle and spices. The palate is massive, remarkably fresh, impressively concentrated and highly precise, with a finish lasting well beyond one minute. He considers it the most extraordinary wine ever produced by the estate at that stage, capable of evolving for several decades.

Expression of the 2007 vintage

The 2007 vintage gives this cuvée a sun-filled, opulent and deeply Rhône expression, yet one that remains remarkably balanced by freshness and precision of substance. In magnum, the wine can evolve more slowly and harmoniously, with expected notes of candied dark fruits, fig, kirsch, liquorice, dried garrigue, truffle, fine leather, cocoa, tapenade and melted spices.

In summary: a monumental Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2007 in magnum, awarded 100 points by Wine Advocate, driven by very old Grenache vines, spectacular concentration, remarkable freshness and ageing potential over several decades.

Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, matured rib of beef, game, Provençal beef stew, roast pigeon, duck with sweet spices, lamb tagine, confit vegetables, truffle-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
