Nestled on the legendary slopes of Vosne-Romanée, La Romanée is the smallest Grand Cru in Burgundy, at just 0.8452 hectare, and one of the most illustrious. A monopole of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, this extraordinary plot lies in the heart of Vosne’s most noble terroir, between Romanée-Conti, Richebourg, and La Grande Rue. Classified as an AOC Grand Cru since 1936, La Romanée perfectly embodies the soul of Vosne: elegance, intensity, and purity, with exceptional ageing potential. Rarity, history, and geological complexity converge here to produce one of the world’s most coveted wines.
This harmonious mix of vine generations gives the wine its natural balance between depth and vitality — the source of its aromatic precision and legendary longevity.
The vineyard lies on a northeast-facing slope between 260 and 280 meters in altitude. Its thin, reddish-brown soils rest on Prémeaux limestone — compact, beige-pink rocks with a fine texture. These limestones contain nodules of flint (chert), visible near the stone cross at the southwest corner of the Grand Cru, above the Les Reignots climat.
The eastern part of the climat rests on more clay-rich limestone, which fractures into thin slabs, adding volume and tension to the wine’s structure. This limestone-clay duality lies at the heart of La Romanée’s style: aerial finesse sustained by exceptional mineral depth, the result of natural drainage and low yields.
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair follows a respectful, near-organic viticultural philosophy. Every gesture is guided by the desire to preserve soil life, the purity of fruit and the grace of Pinot Noir.
La Romanée is a wine of balance and paradox: intense yet weightless, structured yet caressing. Its mesmerizing bouquet blends cherry, rose, violet, fine spices, graphite and noble earth, evolving over time toward truffle, cocoa and forest floor. On the palate, its crystalline purity combines silky texture, vibrant energy and persistent minerality in rare harmony.
It reaches its peak after 10 to 15 years of ageing, though great vintages can evolve gracefully for over 30 years.
Each vintage of La Romanée is an event — the fruit of a minuscule terroir and uncompromising precision. Its proximity to Romanée-Conti and Richebourg places it among Burgundy’s crown jewels, yet its style remains singular: silky, luminous and of rare emotional depth. A true collector’s Grand Cru, sought after by connoisseurs and enthusiasts around the globe, it embodies the perfection of Pinot Noir and the purest soul of Vosne-Romanée.
