Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2010 — Château Rayas

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2010 from Château Rayas belongs to the rarest and most legendary wines of the Rhône Valley. Standing apart from the more powerful expressions of the appellation, Rayas offers a unique style: a luminous, airy and deeply perfumed Grenache, more defined by finesse than by demonstration.

The 2010 vintage gives here a wine of exceptional intensity, combining natural richness, vibrant freshness and a silky texture. Raspberry, ripe cherry, kirsch, rose, garrigue, melted liquorice, white pepper, tobacco, sweet spices and floral notes shape a wine that is broad, delicate and profoundly harmonious, now regarded as one of the great modern successes of the estate.

Terroir: the sands of Rayas and the grace of Grenache

Château Rayas holds a singular place in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The vineyard, isolated among woodland, lies on poor sandy soils, very different from the more familiar image of the appellation’s rolled pebbles. This distinctive terroir gives Grenache a less massive, more refined and more floral expression, often almost Burgundian in its texture.

The winemaking remains deliberately restrained: the fruit is handled without artifice, with a search for balance, transparency and depth. The Rayas style is not built on extraction, but on perfume, length, precision of fruit and that incomparable texture which allows the wine to combine inner power with a sensation of lightness.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby red with garnet reflections, bright and still sustained, showing a slow evolution that reflects both the concentration of the vintage and the nobility of Grenache.

Nose: captivating, pure and highly complex, with ripe raspberry, sweet cherry, kirsch, rose, peony, garrigue, blond tobacco, liquorice, white pepper and fine spices. With aeration, nuances of wild strawberry, dried herbs, orange peel, undergrowth, tea leaf and cherry liqueur may appear.

Palate: broad, silky and perfectly balanced, with impressive fruit richness but no heaviness. Raspberry, preserved cherry, spice, garrigue, tobacco and liquorice unfold in a deep, graceful texture, supported by soft tannins, remarkable freshness and an exceptionally long, floral and savoury finish.

Expert review

100/100 — Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher awarded 100/100 to Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2010, praising a wine of exceptional harmony, marked by rose water, kirsch, garrigue, tobacco, white pepper, melted liquorice and vibrant freshness. Jeb Dunnuck also awarded it 98/100, highlighting its finesse, density, silky tannins and majestic finish, while Falstaff also rated it 98/100.

Expression of the 2010 vintage

The 2010 vintage gives Rayas a deeper and more concentrated expression than some of the estate’s more ethereal years, while preserving the elegance that has made the domaine legendary. Grenache ripeness brings flesh, sweet fruit and amplitude, while the freshness of the vintage maintains remarkable tension and a feeling of absolute balance.

The wine is now entering a fascinating phase, still youthful for Rayas, yet already capable of delivering great emotion after patient opening. Opening the bottle several hours in advance, without heavy decanting, will help preserve its aromatic finesse and texture. Serving it around 15 to 16°C will highlight its perfume, freshness and delicate tannins.

In summary: a Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2010, awarded 100 points by Vinous, from a great vintage, marked by raspberry, cherry, kirsch, rose, garrigue, tobacco, liquorice, silky tannins and a finish of exceptional length.

Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with spices, confit lamb, veal with morels, beef fillet, feathered game, sweetbreads, black truffle, roasted root vegetables, refined Provençal cuisine, mature cheeses or a contemplative tasting around a great collector’s Grenache.
