Domaine François Raveneau — The timeless summit of Chablis

Founded in 1948, Domaine François Raveneau is one of the great icons of white Burgundy. Based in Chablis, the domaine produces Chardonnay of exceptional purity, mineral intensity and depth, sought after worldwide by collectors and lovers of fine white wine.

Today, Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau, together with their team, farm and vinify around 10 hectares of vines across some of the finest sites in the appellation. Raveneau represents a rare vision of Chablis: wines shaped without artifice, marked by patience, detail and an unwavering fidelity to place. Their ability to age for decades places them among the most compelling white wines in France.

The spirit of the domaine

A cult domaine where each wine expresses the nobility of Chablis Chardonnay in its purest form: saline drive, chalky texture, aromatic clarity and mineral depth. Raveneau never seeks demonstration; its wines impress through their line, inner density and quiet emotion.

History: a family domaine devoted to Chablis

The story of Domaine François Raveneau began in 1948, when François Raveneau and Andrée Dauvissat brought together family vineyard holdings in Chablis. Over time, the domaine built its reputation around a small number of exceptional parcels and an uncompromising attachment to Chardonnay grown on the limestone and marl soils of the appellation.

The Raveneau name became synonymous with Chablis of remarkable depth and longevity, wines capable of combining austerity, texture and emotional resonance. The domaine has remained resolutely family-owned, preserving a style built on patience, discretion and exacting vineyard work.

Today, Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau continue this legacy with the same sense of measure. Their work remains focused on clarity of expression, careful élevage and respect for each climat, from village Chablis to the most revered Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

Terroir: the great climats of Chablis

The domaine works some of the most sought-after parcels in Chablis, across village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru appellations. The limestone and marl soils of the region give the wines their characteristic tension, salinity and flinty edge, while each climat brings its own balance of austerity, breadth and depth.

Raveneau’s Premier Cru holdings include Montée de Tonnerre, Vaillons, Butteaux, Chapelot, Mont-Mains and Forêt. The domaine also produces three Grands Crus: Les Clos, Blanchot and Valmur. Each wine is vinified separately, preserving the identity and rhythm of its place.

Expression of place: Chablis, limestone, marl, Chardonnay, flint, citrus, white fruit, salinity, chalky tension and long-lasting freshness.

Raveneau signature: purity, depth, patience, discreet élevage, chalky texture, mineral intensity and exceptional longevity.

Viticulture and winemaking: patience and quiet exactitude

The vines are worked with traditional care and close attention to each parcel, without stylistic effect or unnecessary display. The aim is to obtain fruit of natural concentration and balance, capable of expressing the mineral authority of Chablis with restraint.

Fermentations are slow, and the wines are raised in old oak barrels rather than marked by new wood. Élevage is deliberately unhurried, giving each cuvée time to find its line, texture and inner balance before bottling.

This patient approach gives wines that are never showy, yet profoundly complete: dense without heaviness, saline without austerity, and capable of gaining extraordinary complexity with age.

Style of the wines

Raveneau Chablis wines are renowned for their density, clarity and unmistakable line. They are wines without make-up, carried by white fruit, citrus, discreet flowers, almond, flint and a long saline frame. On the palate, they combine tension, chalky texture and remarkable persistence.

Their strength lies not in immediate opulence, but in inner depth. In youth, they can appear reserved, even austere; with time, they gain breadth, complexity and a captivating sense of harmony. Few Chablis wines age with such grace or reveal so much nuance after twenty or thirty years in bottle.

From village Chablis to Les Clos, every cuvée carries the same signature: a precise, saline and deeply mineral interpretation of Chardonnay, shaped by place rather than winemaking display.

Emblematic cuvées

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos: the domaine’s most majestic wine, combining verticality, breadth, salinity and an exceptionally long finish.

Chablis Grand Cru Valmur: a powerful and deeply structured Grand Cru, marked by density, mineral drive and long-term complexity.

Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot: a more refined and luminous expression, often floral, delicate and finely etched.

Chablis Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre: one of the domaine’s defining wines, often Grand Cru in stature, combining purity, tension and deep mineral structure.

Chablis Premier Cru Butteaux, Vaillons, Chapelot, Mont-Mains and Forêt: a set of Premier Cru expressions that reveal the range of Chablis, from firm, earthy depth to floral lift and saline clarity.

Chablis Village and Petit Chablis: remarkable for their level, already carrying the domaine’s signature of precision, tension and mineral depth.

Cellaring and food pairings

The wines of Domaine François Raveneau offer exceptional cellaring capacity. The Grands Crus and finest Premiers Crus can evolve for 20 to 30 years, sometimes longer in great vintages, gaining notes of candied citrus, oyster shell, warm stone, honey, almond, smoke and iodine.

At the table, Raveneau pairs beautifully with noble fish, turbot, sole, scallops, oysters, lobster, shellfish, poultry in cream sauce, risotto, mature Comté and refined dishes built around texture and freshness. Older bottles deserve simple, precise cuisine that lets their mineral complexity unfold fully.
