Gigondas Le Claux 2016 — Château de Saint Cosme

This Gigondas Le Claux 2016 from Château de Saint Cosme is one of the great single-vineyard expressions of the appellation. Produced from old-vine Grenache, it combines the solar depth of the southern Rhône with an almost Burgundian finesse, showing remarkable balance between richness, mineral tension, floral lift and structure.

Terroir: Gigondas, old vines and limestone depth

Le Claux is among the most sought-after cuvées from Château de Saint Cosme, the historic Gigondas estate led by Louis Barruol. This single-vineyard bottling highlights a very pure expression of Grenache, shaped by old vines and a terroir capable of bringing power, freshness and mineral definition.

The 2016 vintage was particularly successful in the southern Rhône. It gives this wine density, depth and structure, yet with remarkable precision. The richness of fruit is framed by freshness, noble tannins and a long, energetic, finely spiced finish.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep red with dark ruby and purple reflections, dense, brilliant and still very sustained, showing important substance and fine ageing potential.

Nose: intense, floral and deep, with cassis, blackberry, black cherry, violet, camphor, dry earth, spices, garrigue and a touch of graphite. With aeration, nuances of pepper, wild herbs, concentrated red fruits, liquorice and warm stone may appear.

Palate: ample, dense and highly elegant, with deep substance, built tannins and a texture that is at once rich, fresh and precise. The wine shows fine internal energy, chalky minerality and a long, floral, spicy and persistent finish.

Expert review

99/100 — Jeb Dunnuck

Jeb Dunnuck describes the Gigondas Le Claux 2016 from Château de Saint Cosme as a legendary Gigondas in the making. His review highlights a remarkably elegant cuvée, driven by floral notes, camphor, dry earth, cassis and spice. The palate stands out for its deep richness, layered texture, rising tannins and persistent floral quality. A major expression of Gigondas, praised for its finesse, depth and balance.

Expression of the 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage gives this Gigondas Le Claux a particularly complete expression: ripe fruit, natural balance, serious structure and great freshness on the finish. More than a wine of power alone, it impresses through harmony, precision and its ability to combine southern Rhône concentration with aromatic finesse. It can be enjoyed today after gradual aeration, or cellared for several more years in good conditions.

In summary: a high-level Gigondas Le Claux 2016, awarded 99 points by Jeb Dunnuck, marked by Grenache depth, great floral finesse, noble tannins and a long, fresh and mineral finish.

Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, matured rib of beef, duck with sweet spices, roast pigeon, game birds, Provençal beef stew, confit vegetables, garrigue-inspired cuisine or mature hard cheeses.
