In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Rayas embodies one of the rarest and most singular expressions of Grenache. Led by Emmanuel Reynaud, this mythical estate crafts luminous, delicate and highly sought-after wines, admired for their aromatic purity, silky texture and almost ethereal grace.
Château Rayas — The Luminous Quintessence of Grenache
An absolute icon of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the mythical Château Rayas has defied the stylistic codes of the appellation for decades. Far from the famous galets roulés plateaus, this confidential estate rests on around 12 hectares of fine sandy soils, protected by woodland that softens climatic extremes.
Under the direction of Emmanuel Reynaud, Rayas embodies a deeply singular vision of Grenache: a wine of purity, light and delicacy. Here, power never dominates; the fruit is expressed through transparency, aromatic finesse and a finish of rare intensity.
A legendary estate of the southern Rhône, where Grenache reaches a poetic and almost immaterial expression. Château Rayas stands apart through its sandy terroir, artisanal vinification, absence of artifice and wines of unmistakable grace.
Terroir: the fine sandy soils of Rayas
The vineyard of Château Rayas is north-east facing, benefiting from natural coolness that brings balance and elegance to the wines. Unlike the classic image of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the soils here are sandy and free of galets roulés, giving Grenache Noir an airy texture and a unique personality.
The reds are produced mainly from Grenache Noir, while the whites combine Grenache Blanc and Clairette. This woodland-protected terroir, sheltered from the excesses of the Mediterranean climate, gives rise to wines marked by radiant fruit, delicacy and quiet depth.
Terroir expression: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, fine sands, north-east exposure, protective woodland, Grenache Noir, fresh cherry, wild strawberry, fine herbs and gentle spices.
Rayas signature: purity, luminosity, silky texture, artisanal vinification, no new oak, aromatic transparency and ethereal grace.
Viticulture and artisanal vinification
Viticulture is carried out with close attention to the living environment: very low yields, precise vineyard work and manual harvesting to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Every choice seeks to maintain the natural delicacy of the fruit and the identity of the place.
The grapes are vinified as whole clusters, with long spontaneous fermentations driven by indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in very old foudres and vats, with no new oak, in order to preserve aromatic subtlety and transparency.
Style of the wines
Château Rayas Rouge is distinguished by its delicately translucent colour and immediately recognisable aromatic brilliance: fresh cherry, wild strawberry, fine herbs, gentle spices and floral notes. The palate seduces through its silky touch, vibrant length and almost weightless balance.
Château Rayas Blanc, produced in extremely limited quantities, offers a saline, chalky and precise expression. In both colours, Rayas favours light, finesse and emotion, creating wines capable of evolving with rare grace.
Red: fresh cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant, rose petal, blood orange and bright red berries.
Nuances: fine herbs, gentle spices, delicate pepper, thyme, light tea, fine liquorice and floral notes.
White: white flowers, citrus, pear, fresh almond, fine chalk and saline finish.
Emblematic cuvées
Château Rayas Rouge: the estate’s mythical cuvée, produced mainly from Grenache Noir. Luminous, silky and airy, it is marked by fresh cherry, wild strawberry, fine herbs and exceptional length.
Château Rayas Blanc: a rare and highly sought-after white wine, combining Grenache Blanc and Clairette in a saline, chalky, pure and deeply upright style.
Other wines by Emmanuel Reynaud: Château des Tours and Fonsalette extend the stylistic universe of Rayas through different expressions, marked by the same pursuit of sincerity.
Cellaring and food pairings
Château Rayas Rouge reaches full expression after several years in bottle and can age harmoniously for up to 30 years in great vintages. It should be served around 15 to 16°C, with measured aeration and large glasses to preserve its aromatic brightness.
Its delicacy pairs beautifully with roast poultry, pigeon, veal with herbs, gently spiced lamb, noble mushrooms or refined Mediterranean cuisine. The white is ideally suited to noble fish, shellfish, creamy poultry dishes, mature cheeses and dishes with delicate textures.
