Arbois — Wine Capital of the Jura and a Historic Appellation

Located in eastern France at the heart of the Jura region, Arbois is one of the area’s most emblematic appellations. Established in 1936, it is among the very first French AOCs, a symbol of the Jura’s deep-rooted winemaking heritage. Named after the town of Arbois — the true wine capital of the Jura — the appellation covers around 800 hectares across 13 communes.

A Unique Terroir of Marl and Limestone

The terroir of Arbois is built on limestone marl soils, typical of the Jura, which impart a subtle minerality and beautiful tension to the wines. This soil, combined with a semi-continental climate characterized by strong temperature variations, allows for slow, steady ripening and precise aromatic expression.

A Mosaic of Styles and Grape Varieties

The richness of the Arbois appellation lies in the diversity of its wines:

  • White wines: made primarily from Chardonnay and Savagnin. They display vibrant freshness, remarkable aromatic complexity, and strong aging potential. Savagnin, the Jura’s signature grape, is notably used to produce oxidative wines of exceptional depth, such as Vin Jaune.
  • Red wines: crafted from Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir. Elegant and refined, they offer red fruit notes, gentle spice, and supple tannins.
  • Rosé wines: often made from Poulsard, they are light, fruity, and delightfully drinkable, ideal for summer meals.

Traditional Aging and Gastronomic Harmony

Arbois wines are traditionally aged in oak barrels, enhancing their complexity and structure while preserving fruit purity. This ancestral know-how results in balanced, expressive wines with remarkable gastronomic versatility:

  • Seafood and delicate fish dishes with white wines
  • Roasted poultry or red meats with reds
  • Jura aged cheeses, such as Comté, with the more powerful cuvées

An Emblematic Jura Appellation

Through its diversity, history, and precise expression of terroir, Arbois stands as an essential reference for lovers of authentic wines. It embodies the soul of Jura winemaking — rich, distinctive, and elegant.
