Screaming Eagle — The Ultimate Icon of Napa Valley Cult Wines

Screaming Eagle is one of the most mythical estates in the Napa Valley and the absolute emblem of California cult wines. Located in Oakville, at the heart of one of Napa’s most prestigious areas, this discreet estate produces wines of extreme rarity, sought after by collectors all over the world.

Founded by Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent with a passion for vineyards, Screaming Eagle entered legend with its first vintage, 1992, quickly praised by international critics. Today owned by Stan Kroenke, the estate retains a unique aura: tiny production, highly restricted access, absolute discretion and a reputation that extends far beyond California.

The spirit of the estate

A rare and sovereign expression of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Screaming Eagle seeks fruit purity, tannic finesse, aromatic depth and an almost tactile elegance of texture. Its greatness rests not only on rarity, but on an exceptional combination of concentration, grace, precision and longevity.

History: the birth of a Californian myth

The story of Screaming Eagle began in 1986, when Jean Phillips acquired a vineyard property in Oakville. Initially, a significant proportion of the grapes was sold to other Napa Valley estates. Yet one small parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon attracted particular attention, eventually giving birth to a wine produced in extremely limited quantities.

The first vintage, 1992, vinified with the contribution of Heidi Barrett, immediately made an impression. Its release in 1995 and its exceptional critical reception propelled Screaming Eagle to cult status. Within only a few years, the estate became one of the most sought-after, rarest and most expensive wines in California.

In 2006, the property was acquired by Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks, before Stan Kroenke became the estate’s central owner figure. The domaine then pursued a policy of extreme precision: renovation, stricter selection, meticulous vineyard work and a constant search for a finer balance between Californian power and classical elegance.

Terroir: Oakville, the noble heart of Napa Valley

Screaming Eagle is located in the Oakville AVA, one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious sectors for Cabernet Sauvignon. The historic property covers around 57 acres, nearly 23 hectares, with the vineyard farmed extremely selectively according to parcels, grape varieties and vintage conditions.

Oakville’s soils combine gravel, alluvial deposits and well-draining formations, encouraging even grape ripening while preserving fine tannic structure. The climate provides the warmth needed for Cabernet Sauvignon to reach full maturity, while cooler nights help preserve balance, freshness and aromatic precision.

The estate is primarily associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc depending on the blend. A very rare Sauvignon Blanc cuvée is also produced in tiny quantities, sought after as much for its confidential nature as for its purity.

Terroir expression: Napa Valley, Oakville AVA, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, gravel, alluvial soils, black fruits, cassis, graphite, freshness and silky texture.

Screaming Eagle signature: confidential production, extreme selection, very fine tannins, pure fruit, aromatic depth, precise ageing and remarkable ageing potential.

Viticulture: absolute parcel precision

Viticulture at Screaming Eagle is based on extreme attention to detail. Each parcel is monitored with precision in order to obtain grapes that are perfectly ripe, concentrated yet balanced. The estate’s low production allows for severe selection, both in the vineyard and during final blending.

The aim is not simply to produce a powerful Cabernet Sauvignon, but a wine capable of combining density, tannic softness, freshness and aromatic purity. This approach explains the immediately recognisable texture of Screaming Eagle: velvety, deep and ample, yet always held by great precision.

Aromatic profile

Youth: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, violet, graphite, liquorice, fine cedar, cocoa, soft mint and noble spices.

Evolution: black truffle, blond tobacco, fine leather, precious woods, mocha, candied black fruits, forest floor, sweet spices and smoky notes.

Texture: broad, silky and profound palate, polished tannins, dense substance, controlled freshness and a very long finish.

Overall impression: a cult Cabernet Sauvignon, concentrated but never massive, where Californian opulence merges with rare elegance.

Vinification: extreme selection and high-precision ageing

Vinification at Screaming Eagle is based on very small selections and extremely precise parcel work. Lots are vinified separately, then tasted rigorously in order to retain only the components capable of entering the final blend.

Harvest: manual picking, meticulous sorting and selection of grapes at optimal ripeness.

Vinification: micro-vinifications, lot-by-lot work, gentle extraction and a search for extremely fine tannic texture.

Ageing: ageing in French oak barrels, with discreet and precise oak integration serving the depth of the wine.

Philosophy: build a rare, pure and perfectly balanced wine, never allowing concentration to dominate elegance.

Wine style

The style of Screaming Eagle is defined by a very rare combination of power, velvet and restraint. The wine possesses the richness typical of great Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, but with tannic finesse, fruit precision and aromatic purity that give it a singular dimension.

Great vintages can evolve for several decades. With age, black fruit gains complexity, tannins become more integrated and the wine develops nuances of truffle, tobacco, mocha, cedar, fine leather and spice. Screaming Eagle remains above all a wine of rarity, silence and collection.

Emblematic cuvées

Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon: the estate’s grand vin and the ultimate icon of Napa Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant and complemented depending on the vintage by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it combines depth, velvet, fruit purity and exceptional ageing potential.

The Flight: formerly known as Second Flight, this wine expresses a more immediately accessible side of the estate, with a greater role for Merlot and Cabernet Franc depending on the vintage.

Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc: an ultra-confidential white cuvée, produced in tiny quantities. A rare, crystalline and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, reserved for an extremely limited distribution.

Rarity, ageing and gastronomic pairings

The rarity of Screaming Eagle is one of the foundations of its myth. Production remains extremely limited and access to bottles mainly comes through a private allocation list. This confidentiality, combined with consistent quality, makes it one of the most coveted wines on the international market.

At the table, Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with noble meats, aged beef, roast lamb, veal with morels, duck, black truffle dishes, noble mushrooms and mature cheeses. Its balance between power and silky texture also allows refined pairings with highly precise contemporary cuisine.
