History: the birth of a Californian myth

The story of Screaming Eagle began in 1986, when Jean Phillips acquired a vineyard property in Oakville. Initially, a significant proportion of the grapes was sold to other Napa Valley estates. Yet one small parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon attracted particular attention, eventually giving birth to a wine produced in extremely limited quantities.

The first vintage, 1992, vinified with the contribution of Heidi Barrett, immediately made an impression. Its release in 1995 and its exceptional critical reception propelled Screaming Eagle to cult status. Within only a few years, the estate became one of the most sought-after, rarest and most expensive wines in California.

In 2006, the property was acquired by Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks, before Stan Kroenke became the estate’s central owner figure. The domaine then pursued a policy of extreme precision: renovation, stricter selection, meticulous vineyard work and a constant search for a finer balance between Californian power and classical elegance.

Terroir: Oakville, the noble heart of Napa Valley

Screaming Eagle is located in the Oakville AVA, one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious sectors for Cabernet Sauvignon. The historic property covers around 57 acres, nearly 23 hectares, with the vineyard farmed extremely selectively according to parcels, grape varieties and vintage conditions.

Oakville’s soils combine gravel, alluvial deposits and well-draining formations, encouraging even grape ripening while preserving fine tannic structure. The climate provides the warmth needed for Cabernet Sauvignon to reach full maturity, while cooler nights help preserve balance, freshness and aromatic precision.

The estate is primarily associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc depending on the blend. A very rare Sauvignon Blanc cuvée is also produced in tiny quantities, sought after as much for its confidential nature as for its purity.

Viticulture: absolute parcel precision

Viticulture at Screaming Eagle is based on extreme attention to detail. Each parcel is monitored with precision in order to obtain grapes that are perfectly ripe, concentrated yet balanced. The estate’s low production allows for severe selection, both in the vineyard and during final blending.

Vinification at Screaming Eagle is based on very small selections and extremely precise parcel work. Lots are vinified separately, then tasted rigorously in order to retain only the components capable of entering the final blend.
