Crozes-Hermitage is one of the most appealing appellations in the Northern Rhône. Located around the famous hill of Hermitage, it produces expressive red wines mainly from Syrah, as well as a smaller number of white wines made from Marsanne and Roussanne.
More accessible than Hermitage, yet capable of producing deep and ambitious cuvées, Crozes-Hermitage offers a beautiful balance of aromatic intensity, Rhône freshness, peppery notes and immediate drinking pleasure.
Crozes-Hermitage expresses a direct and savoury side of Northern Rhône Syrah: black fruit, violet, pepper, liquorice, black olive and fine tannins. The best domaines produce wines that can be enjoyed young, while gaining complexity after a few years in the cellar.
Red wines represent the majority of the appellation. Made from Syrah, they range from supple, fruity and approachable wines to deeper, more structured and spicy expressions, depending on the terroir, producer and vintage.
The most serious cuvées develop notes of blackberry, cassis, black pepper, smoke, violet, tapenade and fine leather with age. They pair beautifully with generous cuisine, while remaining less monumental than the great wines of Hermitage.
More confidential, white Crozes-Hermitage wines are mainly made from Marsanne, sometimes completed by Roussanne. They offer generous, floral and gastronomic whites, with notes of yellow fruit, white flowers, light honey, almond and a smooth texture on the palate.
Young reds: black fruit, freshness, pepper, violet and accessible tannins.
Top cuvées: greater depth, structure, spice and cellaring potential.
Whites: generous texture, floral notes, yellow fruit and gastronomic pairings.
A red Crozes-Hermitage can be enjoyed young for its fruit, energy and peppery character. The best cuvées, however, gain complexity after 5 to 10 years of cellaring, sometimes longer depending on the producer and vintage.
Red wines are best served around 15 to 16 °C, with light aeration for younger bottles. White wines are best served between 10 and 12 °C, in order to preserve their balance between volume and freshness.
Red Crozes-Hermitage pairs very well with hanger steak with shallots, roast lamb, duck, rib of beef, farmhouse poultry, grilled vegetables, country terrine or Mediterranean dishes with herbs.
The white wines are excellent with fish in sauce, poultry in cream sauce, mushrooms, shellfish, morel-based dishes or aged hard cheeses.
Choosing Crozes-Hermitage means discovering one of the great styles of the Northern Rhône in a form often more accessible than the region’s rarest appellations. The reds offer a clear expression of Syrah, combining fruit, spice and structure, while the whites bring a more confidential and gastronomic dimension.
Our selection focuses on serious domaines, well-crafted cuvées and vintages that offer genuine pleasure at the table, either now or after a few years in the cellar.
In summary: Crozes-Hermitage is an essential Northern Rhône appellation for discovering Syrah in an expressive, spicy and gastronomic style, with characterful reds and a small number of rare, generous and elegant whites.
