Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2017 — E. Guigal
This Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2017 from E. Guigal is one of the house’s great emblematic cuvées, positioned between the renowned Brune et Blonde and the mythical single-vineyard “La La” wines. Sourced from outstanding Côte-Rôtie terroirs, it combines depth, aromatic richness, silky texture and a structure built for ageing.
The 2017 vintage, sunny and expressive in the Northern Rhône, gives here a ripe, ample and harmonious wine, driven by dark fruits, cherry, cassis, spice, violet, smoked bacon, incense and a noble touch of oak. A generous, polished and already seductive Côte-Rôtie, while retaining fine ageing potential.
Terroir: Côte Blonde, Côte Brune and the Guigal signature
Château d’Ampuis is produced from great sectors of Côte-Rôtie, combining the perfumed finesse of Côte Blonde with the deeper, more structured character of Côte Brune. This complementarity gives a complete cuvée: floral, spicy, dense and beautifully long.
The blend is based on 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier, in the historic spirit of the appellation. Ageing for 38 months in new oak barrels, a Guigal hallmark for this cuvée, brings notes of vanilla, mocha, sweet spices and noble wood, supporting the wine’s substance without masking the complexity of Northern Rhône Syrah.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red with purple and garnet reflections, dense and brilliant, with fine visual intensity that reflects the ripeness of the vintage.
Nose: expressive and complex, with black raspberry, cassis, black cherry, blueberry, violet, smoked bacon, incense, vanilla, sweet spices, pepper, cocoa and a touch of noble oak. With aeration, nuances of black olive, fine leather, mocha, graphite and dried flowers may appear.
Palate: ample, round and silky, with generous substance, ripe polished tannins, rich fruit and remarkable overall harmony. The wine is deep, creamy and long, with a persistent finish marked by dark fruits, spice, smoke, violet and a fine mineral imprint.

Expression of the 2017 vintage
The 2017 vintage gives Château d’Ampuis a warm, ripe and particularly seductive expression. The richness of the fruit brings breadth and velvety texture, while the Côte-Rôtie slopes preserve freshness, aromatic tension and the wine’s spicy dimension. Already accessible after proper aeration, it will continue to evolve towards notes of fine leather, truffle, pepper, smoke, black olive and noble undergrowth.
