Côte-Rôtie 2020 — Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet

This Côte-Rôtie 2020 from Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet embodies one of the most sought-after expressions of Syrah in the Northern Rhône. Produced from a blend of numerous parcels across the appellation, it offers a complete reading of Côte-Rôtie: perfume, depth, mineral energy, fine tannins and remarkable ageing potential.

The 2020 vintage gives here a wine that is ripe, pure and structured. The substance is deep, driven by bright dark and blue fruits, floral, smoky, spicy and mineral notes. This is a still youthful, dense and vibrant Côte-Rôtie, ideally deserving several years of cellaring to reveal its full complexity.

Terroir: Côte-Rôtie, a mosaic of lieux-dits and Jamet precision

The Jamet Côte-Rôtie is built as a composition of terroirs. It brings together different parcels from the steep slopes of the appellation, combining more structured sectors with more floral sites in order to achieve balance between depth, freshness, perfume and length.

The Jamet style is based on a very pure expression of Syrah, with whole-cluster vinification and ageing mainly in older demi-muids. This approach preserves fruit energy, aromatic complexity, spicy freshness and the mineral signature of Côte-Rôtie, without seeking overt oak influence or excessive power.

Tasting notes

Appearance: dark ruby with purple reflections, opaque and brilliant, still very youthful in its brightness, with an intensity that reflects the concentration of the vintage.

Nose: vibrant and highly perfumed, with blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, blue fruits, violet, incense, Moroccan spices, pepper, olive, fine smoke and dark minerality. With aeration, nuances of potpourri, liquorice, smoked bacon, graphite and warm stone may appear.

Palate: deep, energetic and structured, with very pure dark and blue fruit, a still firm tannic frame and fine mineral tension. The texture remains precise and free of heaviness, with a long, floral, spicy, smoky and lightly grippy finish, signalling excellent ageing potential.

Expert review

97/100 — Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Josh Raynolds describes the Côte-Rôtie 2020 from Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet as a wine of great aromatic intensity, marked by blackberry, cherry, incense, Moroccan spices, potpourri and smoky minerality. The palate combines dark and blue fruits, olive, flowers and spice, with remarkable energy, youthful tannins and a long, persistent, smoky finish. Decanter also awarded it 97/100, highlighting a classic, fresh and precise style that beautifully reflects the different lieux-dits composing the cuvée.

Expression of the 2020 vintage

The 2020 vintage gives Jamet a powerful, structured and very pure Côte-Rôtie. Fruit ripeness brings density, while whole-cluster vinification, slope freshness and measured ageing preserve the wine’s energy, verticality and aromatic complexity. It can already impress after long aeration, but will fully express itself after several years in the cellar.

In summary: a great Côte-Rôtie 2020 from Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet, awarded 97 points by Vinous, marked by dark and blue fruits, violet, olive, spice, smoke, mineral energy and a structure built for ageing.

Food pairings: roast lamb, matured rib of beef, roast pigeon, duck with spices, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, hare à la royale, Lyon-style warm saucisson, black pepper dishes, truffle, mushrooms or mature hard cheeses.
