Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2018 — E. Guigal
This Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2018 from E. Guigal is one of the house’s most emblematic cuvées, positioned between the famous Brune et Blonde and the mythical “La La” wines. Sourced from several great Côte-Rôtie terroirs, it combines depth, aromatic intensity, precise ageing and a structure built for long cellaring.
The 2018 vintage, warm and generous in the Northern Rhône, gives here a dense, ripe and deeply coloured Syrah, supported by a small proportion of Viognier. The wine brings together dark fruits, violet, smoked game, spice, graphite, mocha and polished tannins, in a broad, powerful and perfectly controlled style.
Terroir: Côte Blonde, Côte Brune and the Guigal signature
Château d’Ampuis is produced from seven exceptional parcels located across the two great sectors of Côte-Rôtie: Côte Blonde and Côte Brune. The Côte Blonde parcels bring finesse, perfume and silky texture, while Côte Brune reinforces structure, depth and ageing potential.
The traditional blend of the cuvée is based on 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Ageing for 38 months in new oak barrels, a hallmark of the Guigal style, brings notes of vanilla, mocha, spice and noble wood, while supporting the wine’s natural power without masking the complexity of the terroirs.
Tasting notes
Appearance: very deep dark red with purple and violet reflections, dense and brilliant, showing remarkable visual intensity that reflects the concentration of the vintage.
Nose: intense and complex, with cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, violet, spring flowers, smoked game, black pepper, graphite, vanilla, mocha, espresso and a fine smoky touch. With aeration, nuances of smoked bacon, black olive, cocoa and sweet spices may appear.
Palate: broad, rich and structured, with dense substance and ripe, polished, perfectly integrated tannins. The wine is powerful yet silky, deep yet balanced, with a long, spicy, smoky and mineral finish driven by great Côte-Rôtie energy.
97/100 — Jeb Dunnuck
Jeb Dunnuck describes the Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2018 from E. Guigal as a remarkable Côte-Rôtie, deep and beautifully balanced, marked by smoked game, violet, acacia flowers, red and black fruits, as well as a polished and harmonious texture. He highlights silky tannins, a layered palate and the capacity to evolve over at least two decades. Wine Advocate also awarded it 95+/100, emphasising its richness, length, dark fruit, mocha notes and the structure shaped by long ageing in new oak.
Expression of the 2018 vintage
The 2018 vintage gives Château d’Ampuis a sunny, concentrated and deeply structured expression. The warmth of the year brings colour, richness and tannic power, while the great Côte-Rôtie slopes preserve freshness, floral complexity and mineral depth. Already seductive through its silky texture, this wine will gain further complexity with cellaring, developing notes of violet, fine leather, smoked bacon, truffle, pepper, mocha and undergrowth.
In summary: a Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis 2018 from E. Guigal, awarded 97 points by Jeb Dunnuck, sourced from seven parcels across Côte Blonde and Côte Brune, marked by dark fruits, violet, smoked game, graphite, mocha, polished tannins and excellent ageing potential.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck with spices, roast pigeon, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, Lyon-style warm saucisson, black pepper dishes, truffle, mushrooms or mature hard cheeses.
