Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2015 — Domaine Georges Vernay

This Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2015 from Domaine Georges Vernay belongs to the estate’s great red expressions, more discreet than its celebrated Condrieu wines, yet just as revealing of its exacting standards. Sourced from a renowned terroir in the southern part of the appellation, it offers a deep, floral, elegant and intensely expressive Syrah.

The 2015 vintage, exceptional in the Northern Rhône, gives here a dense, structured and remarkably balanced wine. Dark fruit richness, mineral freshness, spice, floral and smoky notes are woven into a refined, long and silky palate, faithful to the Vernay style: intensity without heaviness, power without excess.

Terroir: Maison Rouge, depth and Côte-Rôtie finesse

Maison Rouge comes from the southern sector of Côte-Rôtie, on demandingmargin: 0 0 12px; color: #4a4642;"> Maison slopes where Syrah develops an expression that is both dark, spicy and highly elegant. This terroir gives wines of depth, yet rarely massive, with natural tension, fine structure and aromatic complexity marked by dark fruits, violet, spices and smoky notes.

The vinification remains faithful to the spirit of the domaine: precision, measured extraction and ageing that supports the wine’s substance without dominating it. In the 2015 vintage, the cuvée retains superb definition, with fine tannins, a velvety texture and significant ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby red with purple reflections, dense and brilliant, with visual intensity that reflects the concentration of the vintage.

Nose: deep and highly perfumed, with black raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, blue fruits, exotic flowers, violet, fine herbs, spice, pepper, liquorice, smoke and a touch of cedar. With aeration, nuances of cocoa, espresso, graphite, black olive and undergrowth may appear.

Palate: ample, elegant and structured, with concentrated substance but never any heaviness. The tannins are fine, still present, yet already well integrated. The texture is silky, the fruit remains deep, and the finish stretches out beautifully over dark fruits, spice, violet, smoke and a fine mineral imprint.

Expert review

96/100 — Jeb Dunnuck

Jeb Dunnuck describes the Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2015 from Domaine Georges Vernay as the finest red he had tasted from the estate, marked by black raspberry, blackberry, herbs, exotic flowers and spice. He highlights a Côte-Rôtie that does not seek massive power, but seduces through elegance, textural finesse, fine tannins and a great finish. Wine Spectator also awarded it 96/100, while Wine Advocate and Vinous each gave it 94/100.

Expression of the 2015 vintage

The 2015 vintage brings remarkable depth to Maison Rouge, with generous fruit ripeness, solid structure and excellent length. The wine still has the backbone of a great cellaring vintage, yet is beginning to reveal a more harmonious expression, around dark fruit, spice, cedar, smoke, espresso and the first tertiary nuances. Gentle aeration will allow its complexity to open gradually.

In summary: a Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge 2015 from Domaine Georges Vernay, awarded 96 points by Jeb Dunnuck, marked by dark fruits, violet, spice, smoke, silky texture, fine tannins and excellent ageing potential.

Food pairings: roast lamb, matured rib of beef, duck breast, roast pigeon, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, hare à la royale, black truffle, mushrooms, pepper-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
