Côte-Rôtie 2023 — Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet
This Côte-Rôtie 2023 from Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet embodies one of the most emblematic expressions of Syrah in the Northern Rhône. Produced from a blend of several lieux-dits across the appellation, it carries the domaine’s classic signature: floral perfume, pure fruit, mineral tension, fine structure and remarkable ageing potential.
The 2023 vintage gives here a wine that is ripe, fresh and vibrant, marked by red and dark fruits, violet, pepper, olive, smoky notes and a very clear mineral frame. Still young, this Côte-Rôtie already seduces through its aromatic brightness, yet ideally deserves several years in the cellar to gain depth, harmony and complexity.
Terroir: a mosaic of Côte-Rôtie lieux-dits
The Jamet Côte-Rôtie is built as a composition of terroirs, bringing together several parcels located on the steep slopes of the appellation. This approach combines the depth of the more structured sectors, the finesse of the more floral sites and the mineral freshness of schist soils.
True to the domaine’s style, the wine preserves a very pure expression of Syrah, with a significant proportion of whole clusters and ageing mainly in older demi-muids. This vinification preserves fruit energy, floral dimension, peppery freshness and the mineral signature of Côte-Rôtie, without seeking overt oak influence or demonstrative power.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red with purple reflections, bright and still very youthful, with visual intensity that reflects the concentration of the vintage.
Nose: pure and expressive, with black cherry, raspberry, cassis, ripe red fruits, violet, pepper, incense, black olive, fine herbs, smoke and chalky minerality. With aeration, nuances of liquorice, graphite, potpourri, smoked bacon and warm stone may appear.
Palate: harmonious, fresh and structured, with very pure red and dark fruit, fine tannins, remarkable texture and clear mineral tension. The wine is intense without heaviness, with a long, floral, smoky, peppery and savoury finish carried by the classic energy of Domaine Jamet.
98/100 — Decanter
Decanter awarded 98/100 to this Côte-Rôtie 2023 from Domaine Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet. Jeb Dunnuck also highlights a wine rich in red and dark fruits, marked by minerality, pepper and violet, with a significant proportion of whole clusters and ageing mainly in older demi-muids. Wine Spectator gives it 95/100, emphasising a harmonious, pure, floral, smoky and savoury expression, supported by a fine mineral structure.
Expression of the 2023 vintage
The 2023 vintage gives Jamet a Côte-Rôtie that is both ripe, fresh and highly transparent in its expression. The richness of the fruit is balanced by fine acidity, precise tannins and slope-driven tension that brings length. The wine can already impress through its perfume and balance, but it will fully reveal itself after a few years of cellaring, developing more complex notes of dried violet, fine leather, black olive, smoke, pepper and noble undergrowth.
In summary: a great Côte-Rôtie 2023 from Jean-Paul & Corinne Jamet, awarded 98 points by Decanter, marked by red and dark fruits, violet, pepper, olive, smoke, fine minerality and a structure built for ageing.
Food pairings: roast lamb, matured rib of beef, roast pigeon, duck with spices, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, hare à la royale, Lyon-style warm saucisson, black truffle, mushrooms, pepper-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
