Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2012 — E. Guigal
This Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2012 from E. Guigal belongs to the mythical circle of the “La La” wines, the house’s most sought-after single-vineyard cuvées. Sourced from the heart of the Côte Blonde, La Mouline is renowned for its more floral, silky and voluptuous expression of Côte-Rôtie, where the depth of Syrah meets the perfumed elegance of Viognier.
The 2012 vintage gives here a wine that is already highly seductive, intensely aromatic, ample and beautifully textured. Less massive than La Landonne and more immediately sensual, La Mouline 2012 offers a rare balance between dark fruit, flowers, spice, smoked meat, black olive, freshness and mineral length.
Terroir: Côte Blonde, perfume and the texture of La Mouline
La Mouline comes from a vineyard located in the heart of the Côte Blonde, one of the most prestigious sectors of Côte-Rôtie. This terroir gives wines of great aromatic finesse, often marked by violet, dark fruits, spice, smoke and a texture of rare smoothness.
The cuvée traditionally blends Syrah with a proportion of Viognier, co-fermented in the historic spirit of the appellation. Long ageing in new oak barrels, a hallmark of Guigal’s great single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines, brings depth, polished tannins, toasted notes and ageing potential, while preserving the perfumed exuberance of the site.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep dark red with ruby, purple and slightly garnet reflections, still vivid in brightness and showing fine visual density.
Nose: intensely perfumed, with violet, spring flowers, cassis, black raspberry, blackberry, smoked meats, roasted herbs, black olive, liquorice, pepper, sweet spices and a touch of noble oak. With aeration, nuances of smoked bacon, cocoa, graphite, incense and preserved dark fruits may appear.
Palate: ample, voluptuous and silky, with full substance, a caressing texture and ripe, polished, perfectly integrated tannins. The wine unfolds with generosity while retaining freshness, mineral depth and a long, floral, smoky and spicy finish.
97/100 — Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate
Jeb Dunnuck describes the Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2012 from E. Guigal as an immediately seductive and incredibly perfumed cuvée, marked by spring flowers, smoked meats, roasted herbs, olives and sweet cassis. The palate is described as full-bodied, beautifully textured, ample and already irresistible, with a substance that broadens across the palate and the ability to deliver pleasure over the two decades following its release.
Expression of the 2012 vintage
The 2012 vintage gives La Mouline a particularly charming, perfumed and harmonious expression. The wine has the depth required of great age-worthy Côte-Rôtie, but also a more immediate accessibility than some more powerful vintages. With time, it will further develop nuances of dried violet, fine leather, truffle, smoke, bacon, undergrowth, pepper and noble spice.
In summary: a Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2012 from E. Guigal, awarded 97 points by Jeb Dunnuck in Wine Advocate, sourced from the heart of the Côte Blonde and marked by violet, cassis, dark fruits, olive, smoked meats, silky texture and great sensuality on the palate.
Food pairings: roast lamb, matured rib of beef, duck with spices, roast pigeon, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, hare à la royale, Lyon-style warm saucisson, black truffle, mushrooms or mature hard cheeses.
