Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2003 — E. Guigal

This Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2003 from E. Guigal belongs to the most spectacular vintages of this mythical cuvée. Sourced from the heart of the Côte Blonde, La Mouline embodies the most perfumed, sensual and silky expression of the famous “La La” wines, with a unique alliance between the depth of Syrah and the aromatic elegance of Viognier.

The 2003 vintage, exceptionally warm and singular in the Northern Rhône, gives here a wine of impressive richness, more opulent and voluptuous than classical. The substance is broad, velvety and intensely aromatic, driven by ripe dark fruits, crème de cassis, flowers, mocha, spices, smoked meats and a texture of remarkable depth.

Terroir: La Mouline, the solar grace of Côte Blonde

La Mouline comes from a historic terroir of Côte Blonde, renowned for producing Côte-Rôtie wines that are more floral, more caressing and more immediately sensual than the more austere expressions of Côte Brune. This lieu-dit brings a singular perfume, silky texture and great refinement on the palate.

The blend is based on 89% Syrah and 11% Viognier, co-fermented in the traditional spirit of the appellation. This proportion of Viognier enhances the floral brilliance, smoothness and aromatic exuberance of the cuvée, while the long ageing in new oak barrels supports the natural power of the vintage with notes of mocha, caramel, sweet spice and noble wood.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep red with garnet, dark ruby and slightly brick-tinged reflections, dense and brilliant, still showing remarkable intensity for a wine now over twenty years old.

Nose: opulent and captivating, with crème de cassis, black raspberry, plum, heady flowers, violet, potpourri, smoked meats, bacon, mocha, caramel, cola, espresso, sweet spices and a touch of cocoa. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, black olive, noble undergrowth, truffle and smoke may appear.

Palate: broad, massive and extraordinarily velvety, with an almost hedonistic richness, melted tannins, a caressing texture and great width on the palate. The wine remains long, deep and spectacular, carried by ripe dark fruits, spice, smoke, mocha and a persistent, suave and intensely aromatic finish.

Expert review

100/100 — Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Robert Parker describes the Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2003 from E. Guigal as one of the most memorable expressions of the cuvée, marked by immense aromatics, full opulence, a seamless velvety texture and remarkable ageing capacity. Jeb Dunnuck also awarded it 100/100, highlighting a spectacular bottle, rich yet still youthful in energy, deep, floral, smoky and intensely textured. Wine Spectator confirms the wine’s exceptional level with 99/100.

Expression of the 2003 vintage

The 2003 vintage gives La Mouline a solar, voluptuous and almost legendary expression. This is not the most classical profile of Côte-Rôtie: the wine favours richness, concentration, texture and aromatic intensity. Today, it is entering a fascinating stage, where the power of the vintage begins to merge with more evolved nuances of leather, truffle, smoke, spice, undergrowth, mocha and preserved dark fruits. Gentle and progressive opening is recommended, without excessive decanting, in order to preserve its balance and complexity.

In summary: a Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 2003 from E. Guigal, awarded 100 points by Robert Parker and Jeb Dunnuck, sourced from Côte Blonde and marked by crème de cassis, violet, flowers, smoked meats, mocha, caramel, sumptuous texture and a rare collector dimension.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, confit lamb, roast pigeon, duck with spices, game birds, hare à la royale, braised beef cheek, black truffle, mushrooms, pepper-based dishes, reduced sauces or mature hard cheeses.
