Côte-Rôtie Lancement 2015 — Domaine Stéphane Ogier
This Côte-Rôtie Lancement 2015 from Domaine Stéphane Ogier belongs to the estate’s rarest and most sought-after cuvées. Sourced from a great Côte Blonde terroir, it embodies a majestic expression of Northern Rhône Syrah: aromatic intensity, depth, silky texture and noble presence on the palate.
The 2015 vintage, one of the great recent vintages in the Northern Rhône, gives here a wine of remarkable concentration, yet without heaviness. Dark fruit, violet, spice, olive, tapenade, smoky notes and minerality are woven together in a broad, refined and deeply harmonious style.
Terroir: Lancement, the deep elegance of Côte Blonde
Lancement comes from a high-lying sector of the Côte Blonde, one of the most prestigious terroirs in Côte-Rôtie. This site gives particularly perfumed, elegant and textured wines, where the depth of Syrah is expressed with a highly distinctive floral, spicy and mineral dimension.
Stéphane Ogier works with a precise understanding of individual lieux-dits, following a parcel-based approach that highlights the personality of each slope. In the 2015 vintage, Lancement reaches an exceptional level of intensity and balance, while preserving the velvety texture that defines the greatest Côte Blonde Côte-Rôtie wines.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep dark red, almost inky, with purple and ruby reflections, dense and brilliant, announcing great concentration.
Nose: intense, noble and highly perfumed, with black cherry, cassis, blackberry, ripe dark fruits, exotic flowers, violet, olive tapenade, pepper, smoky notes, fine game, spices and a mineral touch. With aeration, nuances of liquorice, cocoa, smoked bacon, graphite and dried flowers may appear.
Palate: broad, deep and perfectly silky, with concentrated substance but no hardness. The tannins are ripe, soft and enveloping, the texture feels majestic and almost caressing, and the finish stretches out beautifully over dark fruits, spice, violet, smoke and a fine mineral imprint.
100/100 — Jeb Dunnuck
Jeb Dunnuck describes the Côte-Rôtie Lancement 2015 from Domaine Stéphane Ogier as the greatest vintage of this cuvée to date, produced in extremely limited quantities. He highlights a deep, concentrated and long wine, driven by exotic flowers, black cherry, cassis, olive tapenade, peppery and gamey notes, with very soft tannins, no hardness and a majestic personality. Wine Advocate also awarded it 98/100, while Vinous gave it 97/100.
Expression of the 2015 vintage
The 2015 vintage brings rare intensity to Lancement: fruit ripeness, textural richness, tannic depth and great length. Despite its power, the wine retains superb slope freshness and remarkable aromatic precision. It can already be approached with long aeration, but its full potential will unfold after several years of cellaring, developing notes of dried violet, fine leather, truffle, black olive, smoke, pepper and noble undergrowth.
In summary: a Côte-Rôtie Lancement 2015 from Stéphane Ogier, awarded 100 points by Jeb Dunnuck, sourced from Côte Blonde and marked by black cherry, cassis, violet, olive, smoke, spice, sumptuous tannins and immense ageing potential.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, pigeon, duck with spices, game birds, hare à la royale, slow-cooked beef cheek, black truffle, mushrooms, pepper-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
