Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur 2017 — Domaine Georges Vernay
This Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur 2017 from Domaine Georges Vernay offers a refined, floral and silky expression of Northern Rhône Syrah. More accessible in its balance than some more massive Côte-Rôtie wines, it highlights fruit finesse, elegant tannins and the aromatic precision that defines the Vernay style.
The 2017 vintage, ripe and expressive in the Northern Rhône, gives here a seductive and already harmonious wine, driven by red and dark fruits, violet, spice, mint, liquorice and a subtle smoky touch. An elegant, textured and fresh Côte-Rôtie, ready to enjoy now or to cellar for a few more years.
Terroir: Côte-Rôtie, granite slopes and Rhône finesse
Blonde du Seigneur comes from steep Côte-Rôtie slopes, on soils marked by granite and metamorphic rocks. The cuvée is based mainly on Syrah, in a style that favours perfume, texture and elegance rather than sheer power.
Domaine Georges Vernay, a historic reference of the Northern Rhône, crafts here a highly drinkable Côte-Rôtie, with precise substance, polished tannins and fine freshness on the finish. The wine retains the depth expected from the appellation, while remaining particularly refined and balanced.
Tasting notes
Appearance: dark red with ruby and violet reflections, bright and elegant, with measured intensity that suggests finesse rather than extraction.
Nose: expressive and refined, with black cherry, raspberry, blackberry, ripe red fruits, violet, mint, pepper, liquorice, sweet spices and a light smoky touch. With aeration, nuances of graphite, black olive, undergrowth and dried flowers may appear.
Palate: medium-bodied, silky and concentrated, with a creamy texture, fine tannins and beautiful freshness. The fruit remains clear and seductive, while the finish extends over flowers, spice, mint and an elegant mineral touch.
92/100 — Wine Advocate
Wine Advocate describes the Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur 2017 from Domaine Georges Vernay as a wine with a seductive nose, marked by mint and red fruits. The palate is medium-bodied, admirably concentrated, with a silky, creamy texture and a fresh finish where charming floral notes persist. Jeb Dunnuck also awarded it 91/100.
Expression of the 2017 vintage
The 2017 vintage gives Blonde du Seigneur a ripe, perfumed and already very enjoyable expression. The richness of the fruit is balanced by fine freshness, a delicate tannic frame and an elegant finish. The wine can be opened today after gentle aeration, yet still has the structure to evolve for a few more years around more floral, smoky, spicy and lightly tertiary notes.
In summary: a Côte-Rôtie Blonde du Seigneur 2017 from Domaine Georges Vernay, awarded 92 points by Wine Advocate, marked by red fruits, mint, violet, spice, silky tannins and a fresh, floral finish.
Food pairings: roast lamb, duck breast, roast pigeon, matured rib of beef, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, Lyon-style warm saucisson, black pepper dishes, mushrooms or mature hard cheeses.
