Domaine E. Guigal — Rhône Excellence Since 1946
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis, at the heart of Côte-Rôtie, Domaine E. Guigal is one of the most emblematic houses in the Rhône Valley. Created by Étienne Guigal, former cellar master at Vidal-Fleury, the house has, over three generations, become a global benchmark for the precision, depth and consistency of its wines.
Under the impetus of Marcel Guigal, then Philippe Guigal, oenologist and representative of the third generation, the house has developed a unique vision: respecting the historic terroirs of the northern Rhône while mastering every detail of vinification and ageing. From accessible Côtes du Rhône wines to mythical single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie cuvées, Guigal embodies a rare alliance of family tradition, technical precision and international ambition.
A family-owned house with global influence, built on great Rhône terroirs, rigorous grape selection and long, precise, ambitious ageing. Guigal seeks wines of depth, texture and longevity, without ever losing the identity of each appellation.
History: from Ampuis to a global Rhône icon
Étienne Guigal arrived in Ampuis in 1924 at the age of fourteen. After working at Vidal-Fleury, where he contributed to the development of the house, he founded his own estate in 1946. From the 1960s onward, his son Marcel Guigal took over the business at a very young age and gave it exceptional momentum.
The house later acquired several major estates, including Vidal-Fleury, Château d’Ampuis in Côte-Rôtie, and later Domaine de Bonserine. The story also expanded into the southern Rhône with Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Château d’Aqueria in Tavel. This development allows Guigal to offer a complete interpretation of the Rhône, from the granitic north to the Mediterranean south.
Terroirs: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage and great Rhône sites
Guigal’s historic birthplace remains Côte-Rôtie, with its steep slopes, narrow terraces and soils of schist, gneiss and mica-schist. Syrah reaches a unique expression here: deep, spicy, smoky, floral and intensely mineral. Viognier, often present in small proportions in some traditional Côte-Rôtie wines, also finds one of its greatest expressions in Condrieu.
The house also works with major northern Rhône terroirs: Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage. In the southern Rhône, Guigal produces wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and Côtes du Rhône in red, white and rosé, with a constant focus on consistency and clarity.
Terroir expression: Côte-Rôtie, Ampuis, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, schist, granite, rolled pebbles and steep hillsides.
Guigal signature: aromatic richness, precise ageing, concentration, silky texture, controlled power, perfectly integrated oak, balance and longevity.
Viticulture: rigorous selection and respect for great hillsides
The finest terroirs worked by Guigal are often located on very steep slopes, especially in Côte-Rôtie, where viticulture remains deeply manual. Harvesting involves careful grape selection, and yields are controlled in order to favour concentration, ripeness and balance.
The house does not seek to impose a single philosophy across its extensive range: it adapts its approach to each terroir, each grape variety and each appellation. The priority remains the quality of the raw material, harvest precision and fidelity to the character of each place.
Northern Rhône Syrah: blackberry, cassis, violet, black pepper, black olive, smoked bacon, graphite, liquorice, fine leather and spices.
Viognier and whites: apricot, white peach, pear, white flowers, fine honey, almond, beeswax, sweet spices and saline freshness.
Southern Rhône: black fruits, ripe cherry, garrigue, thyme, bay leaf, pepper, cocoa, Mediterranean spices and generous texture.
Overall impression: rich, precise and profound wines, where aromatic power is balanced by structure, freshness and length.
Vinification and ageing: mastery of time
One of Guigal’s signatures lies in the duration and precision of its ageing. Vinifications are carried out with rigour, then the wines are aged for extended periods to gain complexity, texture and stability. This patience is particularly visible in the great Côte-Rôtie cuvées.
Harvest: strict grape selection, often manual in the finest hillside terroirs.
Vinification: precise extraction, vinification adapted to each appellation and a search for balance between power, fruit and structure.
Ageing: French oak barrels, with very long ageing for the great cuvées; the “La-La” wines can spend around 42 months in new oak barrels.
Philosophy: use time and oak as instruments of precision, refining tannins, building depth and supporting longevity.
The “La-La” wines: La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque
The three single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie cuvées — La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque — represent the mythical summit of the house. Often nicknamed the “La-La” wines, these cuvées helped establish Côte-Rôtie among the world’s great red wine terroirs.
La Mouline stands out for its floral sensuality and traditional presence of Viognier; La Landonne expresses a darker, more massive and mineral Syrah; La Turque combines power, spice, velvet texture and complexity. Their long ageing in new oak remains one of the most recognisable markers of the Guigal style.
Emblematic cuvées
Côte-Rôtie “La Mouline”: a sensual and floral cuvée from old Syrah vines co-planted with a share of Viognier, showing silky texture and great complexity.
Côte-Rôtie “La Landonne”: the most powerful, dark and structured expression, made from Syrah and renowned for its mineral depth and immense ageing potential.
Côte-Rôtie “La Turque”: a spicy, velvety and complex cuvée, stylistically positioned between the sensuality of La Mouline and the power of La Landonne.
Côte-Rôtie “Château d’Ampuis”: a blend of great Côte-Rôtie lieux-dits, combining richness, precision and classical balance.
Condrieu “La Doriane”: an opulent and refined Viognier, combining apricot, white flowers, broad texture and controlled freshness.
Hermitage “Ex-Voto” red and white: prestige cuvées produced in great years, expressing the power, minerality and depth of Hermitage.
Saint-Joseph “Vignes de l’Hospice”: a precise and vertical Syrah from a spectacular granitic terroir, marked by purity, graphite and tension.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Nalys: a southern expression of Guigal’s savoir-faire, blending Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre in a broad, spicy and structured register.
Tavel Château d’Aqueria: a gastronomic rosé, structured, intense and marked by the freshness of Tavel’s great terroirs.
Côtes du Rhône red, white and rosé: accessible and consistent cuvées, true gateways into the Guigal universe.
Wine style
The wines of Guigal are known for their aromatic richness, technical precision and strong ageing capacity. Northern Rhône reds combine black fruits, pepper, violet, smoke, polished tannins and great depth. The great Côte-Rôtie wines offer a particularly luxurious texture, supported by long and perfectly integrated ageing.
The whites, especially Condrieu and Hermitage, combine richness of texture, freshness and aromatic complexity. The southern Rhône wines express more Mediterranean warmth, spice, garrigue and generosity, while retaining the house’s sense of balance.
