A family icon of the Rhône Valley, Maison E. Guigal is internationally renowned for its legendary Côte-Rôtie wines, long ageing and remarkable mastery of the great Rhône terroirs.
Maison E. Guigal — Rhône excellence since 1946
Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, a former cellar master at Vidal-Fleury, Maison E. Guigal is one of the most emblematic names in the Rhône Valley. Over three generations, the family house has become a global reference for consistency, depth and precision.
Under the leadership of Marcel Guigal, then Philippe Guigal, the house developed a demanding vision: revealing the great Rhône terroirs through precise vinification, rigorous selection and ambitious ageing. From accessible Côtes du Rhône to the legendary single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines, Guigal combines family tradition, depth of style and international prestige.
The spirit of the house
Guigal seeks wines of texture, depth and longevity, while preserving the identity of each appellation. The house signature is built on rigorous grape selection, precise ageing and an ambitious interpretation of the great terroirs of both the Northern and Southern Rhône.
Terroir and winemaking
Guigal’s historic birthplace remains Côte-Rôtie, with its steep slopes, narrow terraces and soils of schist, gneiss and mica-schist. Syrah reaches a profound, spicy, smoky and floral expression here, sometimes complemented by a small proportion of Viognier in the traditional spirit of the appellation.
The house also works with major Northern Rhône terroirs, including Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage, as well as several Southern Rhône appellations. Vinification is conducted with precision, while ageing, often long for the great cuvées, is designed to refine tannins, build depth and support long-term cellaring.
Emblematic cuvées
- Côte-Rôtie La Mouline — a sensual and floral cuvée, celebrated for its silky texture and remarkable complexity.
- Côte-Rôtie La Landonne — a dark, powerful and structured expression of Syrah, built for very long ageing.
- Côte-Rôtie La Turque — a spicy, velvety and profound cuvée, combining the grace of La Mouline with the intensity of La Landonne.
- Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis — a blend of great lieux-dits, rich, precise and classical in balance.
- Condrieu La Doriane — an ample and refined Viognier, shaped by apricot, white flowers and generous texture.
- Hermitage Ex-Voto — a prestige cuvée, red or white depending on the vintage, expressing the mineral depth of Hermitage.
- Saint-Joseph Vignes de l’Hospice — Syrah from a spectacular granitic terroir, precise, vertical and graphite-driven.
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château de Nalys — a Southern Rhône expression of the Guigal style, ample, spicy and structured.
Cellaring and food pairings
Guigal’s great cuvées offer remarkable ageing potential, particularly the single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines, Château d’Ampuis, La Doriane and Ex-Voto. The Northern Rhône reds pair beautifully with rib of beef, roast lamb, pigeon, spiced duck, mushroom-based dishes and mature cheeses. The Condrieu and Hermitage whites are excellent with noble fish, creamy poultry, shellfish or lightly spiced cuisine.
