Rhône Valley — A Mosaic of Great Terroirs Between Lyon and Marseille

Located between Lyon and Marseille, the Rhône Valley is one of France’s great wine regions, renowned for the diversity and quality of its wines. It is divided into two distinct zones: the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône, each with its own identity and style. In the north, winemaking reaches exceptional heights in appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, and Condrieu. In the south, production is more extensive and diverse, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape standing out as an iconic reference of the region.

Northern Rhône — Syrah in All Its Nobility

1) Côte-Rôtie — The Refined Elegance of the North

Côte-Rôtie produces exclusively red wines made mainly from Syrah, sometimes blended with Viognier to bring floral lift and suppleness. These wines are celebrated for their refined aromatics — black fruits, violet, gentle spices — and a silky texture with remarkable ageing potential.

Top producers:

  • E. Guigal (La Mouline, La Turque, La Landonne)
  • M. Chapoutier (Mordorée)
  • Domaine Jean-Paul & Jean-Luc Jamet
  • Domaine Rostaing

Great vintages: 2010, 2009, 2003, 1999, 1991, 1985, 1983, 1978, 1976.

2) Condrieu — The Pure Expression of Viognier

Condrieu is exclusively dedicated to Viognier, producing voluptuous white wines with aromas of apricot, white flowers, and honey, with a velvety, generous mouthfeel. These wines are best enjoyed young.

Ageing potential: up to 5 years for most cuvées.
Flagship producer: E. Guigal.

3) Hermitage — Power and Timeless Nobility

Hermitage is a prestigious appellation producing powerful reds from Syrah and complex whites from Marsanne and Roussanne. The reds are known for their density, exceptional ageing potential, and aromas of black fruits, spices, and leather. The whites, rare and sought-after, offer richness and remarkable depth.

4) Cornas — The Authenticity of Pure Syrah

Cornas, a granitic terroir just south of Hermitage, produces exclusively 100% Syrah wines. More rustic in youth, they gain depth and complexity with age. Known for their power and structure, these wines display blackberry, black pepper, and smoked meat notes, with impressive ageing capacity.

Great vintages: 2010, 2009, 2003, 1999, 1990, 1988, 1985, 1983, 1979, 1978, 1976, 1969.

Southern Rhône — Sun, Generosity, and Diversity

5) Châteauneuf-du-Pape — The Icon of the South

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most prestigious appellation of the Southern Rhône. It produces both red and white wines of exceptional richness and aromatic complexity.
