Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2016 — Clos du Mont-Olivet, Double Magnum OWC

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2016 from Clos du Mont-Olivet, offered here in double magnum 3 L in its original wooden case, embodies one of the greatest traditional expressions of the appellation. Deep, powerful and remarkably balanced, it combines the richness of Grenache, the complexity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s old terroirs and the exceptional freshness of the 2016 vintage.

Terroir: old Grenache, garrigue and Rhône depth

La Cuvée du Papet represents the most ambitious selection from Clos du Mont-Olivet. Sourced from old vines and the estate’s finest terroirs, it expresses a deeply classical style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: dark fruit, garrigue, spices, noble structure, textural richness and remarkable ageing potential.

The 2016 vintage brings rare harmony to this cuvée, combining concentration, ripeness, freshness and refined tannins. The double magnum format encourages slower evolution and further enhances the collectible dimension of this bottle, especially in its original wooden case.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet with dark ruby and purple reflections, dense, brilliant and still very sustained, with remarkable intensity reinforced by the slow evolution of the large format.

Nose: broad and deep, with black raspberry, black cherry, blackberry, kirsch, garrigue, thyme, bay leaf, pepper, liquorice, crushed rock and saline minerality. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, cocoa, black olive, sweet spices and subtle iodine notes may appear.

Palate: ample, dense and concentrated, with impressive substance, deep dark fruit and progressive tannins that structure the wine without hardness. The finish is long, spicy, mineral and persistent, carried by controlled power and great Rhône nobility.

Expert review

100/100 — Jeb Dunnuck

Jeb Dunnuck describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2016 from Clos du Mont-Olivet as one of the greatest wines ever produced by Thierry Sabon. His review highlights a wine more powerful than the classic cuvée, deeply marked by black raspberry, crushed rock, garrigue, saline minerality and fine iodine notes. The palate is ample, dense and concentrated, with impressive substance, progressive tannins and a depth that gains further intensity with aeration. A masterful, traditional and age-worthy expression, considered by Dunnuck as an absolute benchmark for Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Expression of the 2016 vintage and double magnum format

The 2016 vintage ranks among the great recent years in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, thanks to its balance between ripeness, freshness, depth and fine tannins. In this double magnum, La Cuvée du Papet should evolve with remarkable slowness, gradually gaining complexity through notes of dried garrigue, fine leather, blond tobacco, cocoa, melted spices, Mediterranean undergrowth and minerality.

In summary: an exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2016, awarded 100 points by Jeb Dunnuck and offered in double magnum OWC. A rare, deep and traditional cuvée, driven by the controlled power of Grenache, saline minerality, garrigue and immense ageing potential.

Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, rib of beef, Provençal beef stew, game, duck with spices, lamb tagine, confit vegetables, truffle-based cuisine, dishes with garrigue herbs or mature hard cheeses.
