Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2016 — Domaine de la Barroche
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2016 from Domaine de la Barroche embodies a rare, profound and beautifully refined expression of Grenache. Sourced from very old vines planted on sandy soils, this confidential cuvée favours fruit purity, textural finesse and elegance over sheer power, in one of the great recent vintages of the southern Rhône.
Terroir: old vines, sandy soils and Grenache purity
Cuvée Pure highlights a particularly fine and luminous interpretation of Grenache in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The very old vines, rooted in sandy terroirs, give a wine of great aromatic delicacy, with a silky texture, melted tannins and an expression that feels more airy than massive.
The 2016 vintage reinforces the natural balance of this cuvée: fruit ripeness, freshness, depth and precision respond to one another with harmony. The wine retains the Mediterranean richness of the appellation, while offering a remarkable impression of finesse, vibration and purity.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with ruby and purple reflections, brilliant, dense and still very sustained, with an intensity that reflects the depth of the vintage.
Nose: pure and expressive, with black cherry, ripe raspberry, morello cherry, red and dark fruits, sweet spices, garrigue and fine mineral nuances. With aeration, touches of dried rose, liquorice, warm earth, light cocoa and dried herbs may appear.
Palate: ample, silky and deeply balanced, with remarkable concentration but no heaviness. The tannins are perfectly melted, the texture velvety and the finish long, elegant and vibrant, carried by Grenache purity and subtle freshness.
99/100 — Wine Advocate
Joe Czerwinski describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2016 from Domaine de la Barroche as a masterful expression of Grenache, sourced from very old vines planted on sandy soils. His review highlights a wine of remarkable purity, at once ample, silky and deeply balanced, with aromas of black cherry, ripe raspberry, sweet spices, garrigue and fine mineral nuances. The palate stands out for its velvety texture, great concentration without heaviness, perfectly melted tannins and a long, elegant and vibrant finish. A rare cuvée, almost airy despite its richness, illustrating the full finesse possible from great Grenache in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Expression of the 2016 vintage
The 2016 vintage gives this Cuvée Pure a particularly complete dimension: ripe fruit, freshness, silky tannins, depth and length. The wine can already seduce through its brightness and texture after measured aeration, but it also has strong ageing potential, with expected evolution toward notes of fine leather, dried garrigue, melted spices, cocoa, subtle truffle and minerality.
In summary: a rare and refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Pure 2016, awarded 99 points by Wine Advocate, driven by very old Grenache vines on sandy soils, a velvety texture, outstanding fruit purity and a long, elegant and vibrant finish.
Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, veal chop, pigeon, duck with sweet spices, confit vegetables, lamb tagine, garrigue-inspired cuisine, truffle-based dishes or mature hard cheeses.
