Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 1999

This Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 1999 is a rare and singular expression of Grenache in the southern Rhône. Standing apart from the often powerful and solar style of the appellation, Rayas seeks finesse, perfume and transparency. The 1999 offers a mature, deep and structured reading of the domaine: kirsch, raspberry, spiced plum, violet, lavender, pine needles, black fruits, earthy notes, a light noble meaty nuance and a firm, fresh and persistent finish.

Château Rayas is one of the most mythical names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its grand vin is made essentially from Grenache, with very limited production and an immediately recognisable style: often lighter in colour than the appellation average, airy aromatics, silky texture, slow maturity and a great ability to evolve towards floral, spicy and tertiary nuances. The 1999 is a serious vintage, more structured and tannic than some more delicate Rayas vintages, yet still carried by the domaine’s unique identity.

The spirit of the wine

A Châteauneuf-du-Pape apart, more Burgundian in spirit than demonstrative in power. The 1999 combines Rayas’ aromatic charm with a more serious structure: ripe red fruits, kirsch, black fruits, violet, lavender, pine, spice, earth and a light noble animal note. The palate shows richness, but also tension and firmness that extend the finish.

Terroir: Rayas, fine sands and the freshness of Courthézon

The terroir of Château Rayas differs radically from the classic image of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here, the vines do not grow on the famous rounded galets that store heat, but mainly on very fine, poor and well-draining sands. Located near Courthézon, in a cooler and more isolated environment, the vineyard gives Grenache a more airy, perfumed and delicate expression.

These sandy soils encourage slow ripening, great aromatic purity and finer tannins than in many other sectors of the appellation. They explain Rayas’ singular texture: less massive, less alcoholic in sensation, but very deep in perfume. In the 1999, this terroir translates into a ripe, structured yet elegant Grenache, combining kirsch, raspberry, plum, violet, lavender, pine, spice and mineral freshness.

Terroir expression: Grenache, fine sands, natural drainage, raspberry, kirsch, spiced plum, violet, lavender, pine, fine earth, delicate tannins and mineral freshness.

Rayas signature: rare production, almost pure Grenache, often pale colour, floral perfume, silky texture, atypical elegance and a highly singular identity within Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Tasting notes

Appearance: ruby to evolved garnet, often less dark than many Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, with the natural transparency typical of the Rayas style. The finest bottles retain brightness and discreet depth, while evolution brings brick reflections and a softer patina.

Nose: expressive, complex and unmistakably Rayas, with kirsch, ripe raspberry, spiced plum, lightly jammy black fruits, violet, lavender, pine needles, Mediterranean herbs, fine earth and a light noble meaty note. With aeration, nuances of soft leather, spice, forest floor, pepper, discreet liquorice and macerated red fruits may appear.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, rich, broad and structured, with ripe fruit but enough freshness to maintain balance. The wine shows serious substance, tannins still present and a firmer finish than in the domaine’s most ethereal vintages. Flavours of kirsch, raspberry, black fruits, plum, spice, earth and dried herbs stretch into a long, slightly tightened, fresh and persistent finish.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: kirsch, ripe raspberry, spiced plum, black fruits, macerated red fruits.

Flowers and spices: violet, lavender, pepper, sweet spices, Mediterranean herbs, discreet liquorice.

Evolution and terroir: pine needles, fine earth, forest floor, soft leather, light noble meat, structuring tannins.

Overall impression: mature, rare, perfumed and structured Rayas, more serious than light, with a highly atypical elegance for Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Expression of the 1999 vintage

The 1999 vintage gives Rayas a more firmly built profile than some of the domaine’s more delicate years. Several notes point to a wine of dark ruby colour, able to conceal its alcohol level, with kirsch aromas, serious structure and marked tannins. Other tastings show a more evolved and seductive expression, with violet, pine, lavender, raspberry, spiced plum and a slight fleshy dimension.

Today, Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 1999 should be tasted with close attention to storage condition. A fine bottle can offer the richness of the vintage, the aromatic elegance of the domaine and well-established tertiary complexity. It should be opened carefully, tasted immediately, then given moderate aeration in order to preserve its perfume, texture and fresh finish.

In summary: a rare, mature and structured Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 1999, driven by Grenache, Rayas’ fine sandy soils and a floral, spicy and deeply singular aromatic profile.

Dominant aromas: kirsch, ripe raspberry, spiced plum, black fruits, violet, lavender, pine needles, Mediterranean herbs, fine earth, soft leather, light noble meat and a freshly spiced finish.
