Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina 2012 — Domaine Clos Saint Jean

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina 2012 from Domaine Clos Saint Jean, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the most powerful, profound and sought-after cuvées of the Southern Rhône. From the great terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this cuvée combines the Mediterranean richness of Grenache with the dark, spicy and earthy structure of Mourvèdre: blackberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, fig, kirsch, garrigue, thyme, bay leaf, pepper, liquorice, cocoa, tapenade, fine leather, warm earth and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Clos Saint Jean is among the emblematic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, recognised for wines of great concentration, remarkable aromatic intensity and generous texture. Deus Ex Machina represents one of the estate’s most prestigious expressions, with dense substance, deep fruit and a structured frame built for ageing. The 2012 vintage, ripe, solar and balanced, now offers a broad, spicy and already complex wine, while preserving fine energy. The magnum format encourages slower evolution, better preservation of freshness and a particularly sought-after collector dimension.

The spirit of the wine

A great Châteauneuf-du-Pape of power, density and Mediterranean nobility, where the generosity of the 2012 vintage remains carried by deep structure and spicy freshness. The wine combines ripe black fruits, fig, kirsch, garrigue, liquorice, cocoa, tapenade, fine leather and warm earth, with a broad, velvety, concentrated and highly persistent palate. The magnum format reinforces its ageing potential, balance and collector character.

Terroir: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, rolled pebbles, garrigue and southern depth

The terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape rests on a mosaic of soils combining rolled pebbles, clay, sand and limestone, under the influence of the Mediterranean climate and the mistral. These conditions give solar, deep and spicy wines, capable of combining fruit richness, tannic structure, relative freshness and aromatic complexity.

In Deus Ex Machina, Grenache brings generosity, kirsch, fig, plum and velvety texture, while Mourvèdre reinforces structure, with notes of pepper, tapenade, leather, warm earth and ageing capacity. In 2012, vintage ripeness gives a fleshy and expressive wine, while the balance of the terroir preserves freshness, spicy tension and long persistence.

Terroir expression: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache, Mourvèdre, rolled pebbles, clay, garrigue, blackberry, cassis, black plum, fig, kirsch, pepper, liquorice, tapenade and warm earth.

Clos Saint Jean signature: concentration, deep fruit, velvety texture, controlled power, Mediterranean richness, spice, garrigue, structure and very long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet with purple highlights and emerging mahogany reflections, dense, bright and still sustained. In magnum, evolution is generally slower, allowing the wine to preserve brilliance, depth and visual freshness for many years.

Nose: deep, ripe and intensely Mediterranean, with blackberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, fig, kirsch, ripe black fruits, garrigue, thyme, bay leaf, pepper, liquorice and cocoa. With aeration, nuances of tapenade, fine leather, blond tobacco, warm earth, sweet spices, black olive, noble smoke, light truffle and dried herbs may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, velvety and powerfully structured, with ripe black fruit carried by freshness that remains present. Flavours of blackberry, cassis, plum, fig, kirsch, liquorice, pepper, garrigue, tapenade, fine leather, cocoa and warm earth unfold with depth, supported by ripe, polished and persistent tannins. The finish is very long, spicy, saline and mineral, with an impression of noble power, controlled warmth and great Rhône persistence.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: blackberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, fig, kirsch, ripe black fruits, concentrated dark berries.

Spices and garrigue: pepper, liquorice, thyme, bay leaf, dried herbs, garrigue, tapenade, black olive, sweet spices.

Evolution and terroir: fine leather, cocoa, blond tobacco, warm earth, light truffle, noble smoke, polished tannins, saline minerality.

Overall impression: profound, powerful and voluptuous Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with velvety texture, a strong Mediterranean imprint and a very long spicy, mineral finish.

Expression of the 2012 vintage

The 2012 vintage in the Southern Rhône produced wines that are ripe, expressive and balanced, often marked by generous fruit, spice and broad texture. In the great cuvées of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this year now offers a fine balance between maturity, aromatic complexity and relative freshness, with evolution already underway but still plenty of energy.

Today, this Deus Ex Machina 2012 in magnum can already be highly impressive after measured aeration, yet it retains solid capacity for further evolution. With time, it will gain fine leather, truffle, tobacco, melted spices, warm earth, dried garrigue, tapenade and smoky notes, while preserving the depth of black fruit and the southern structure of the cuvée.

In summary: a profound, powerful and prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus Ex Machina 2012 in magnum, driven by the generosity of the vintage, the Mediterranean richness of the terroir and the intense signature of Domaine Clos Saint Jean.

Dominant aromas: blackberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, fig, kirsch, garrigue, dried herbs, pepper, liquorice, tapenade, fine leather, cocoa, warm earth, light truffle and a very long mineral finish.
