Cornas 2002 — Thierry Allemand

This Cornas 2002 from Thierry Allemand embodies a rare, authentic and profoundly artisanal expression of Syrah from the Northern Rhône. From a mythical granite terroir, Cornas gives wines of character, dark, spicy and deeply mineral. In the 2002 vintage, fresher, more delicate and demanding, the wine stands out through an evolved, fine and earthy expression: blackberry, cassis, black plum, Morello cherry, black pepper, faded violet, black olive, smoked bacon, fine leather, graphite, forest floor, damp earth and a long mineral finish.

Thierry Allemand is one of the most respected figures in Cornas, renowned for deeply personal wines shaped with rigour, patience and remarkable fidelity to terroir. His Cornas wines are distinguished by their energy, depth, mineral tension and ability to evolve towards noble complexity. The 2002 vintage, marked by difficult conditions in the region, now offers a finer, more time-polished and more fragile reading, where provenance and storage conditions play an essential role.

The spirit of the wine

A mature, sincere and mineral Cornas, where Syrah speaks in a register more delicate than powerful, with notes of evolved black fruit, pepper, violet, black olive, smoke, fine leather, graphite and damp earth. The palate is supple, spicy, fresh and persistent, carried by a fine granite frame and noble tertiary evolution. It is a wine of terroir, nuance and authenticity.

Terroir: Cornas, granite, steep slopes and Syrah of character

The Cornas appellation, located on the right bank of the Rhône, rests on steep slopes of decomposed granite, exposed to the sun and planted exclusively with Syrah. These poor, stony and acidic soils give wines that are at once powerful, profoundly mineral and marked by notes of black fruit, pepper, olive, smoke and warm earth.

With Thierry Allemand, Cornas takes on a particularly pure and expressive dimension. The grower’s work highlights fruit depth, granite energy, tannic texture and the natural complexity of Syrah. In 2002, the terroir now expresses itself with a more evolved, less solar finesse, where notes of pepper, graphite, forest floor, black olive and fine leather take over from the initial black fruit.

Terroir expression: Syrah, Cornas, Northern Rhône, granite, steep slopes, blackberry, cassis, black plum, faded violet, black pepper, black olive, smoke, graphite and mineral freshness.

Thierry Allemand signature: artisanal depth, fruit purity, granite energy, precise extraction, natural complexity, authenticity, tension and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet evolving towards brick and mahogany reflections depending on storage, with an intensity now more time-polished. The colour reflects the evolution of a mature Syrah, whose expression depends strongly on the quality of bottle storage.

Nose: deep, evolved and highly typical of Cornas, with blackberry, cassis, black plum, Morello cherry, melted black fruits, black pepper, faded violet, black olive, cold smoke and graphite. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, smoked bacon, forest floor, damp earth, liquorice, tapenade, dried spices, black tea and light truffle may appear.

Palate: supple, fresh, spicy and already fully softened, with evolved black fruit carried by a fine mineral frame. Flavours of blackberry, cassis, plum, black olive, pepper, liquorice, leather, smoke, graphite and damp earth unfold with complexity, supported by time-polished tannins and acidity that remains present. The finish is long, saline, peppery and mineral, with an impression of maturity, sincerity and strong Rhône identity.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: blackberry, cassis, black plum, Morello cherry, melted black fruits, evolved dark berries.

Spices and Syrah: black pepper, faded violet, black olive, tapenade, liquorice, smoked bacon, cold smoke.

Terroir and evolution: graphite, fine leather, forest floor, damp earth, black tea, light truffle, time-polished tannins, granite minerality.

Overall impression: mature, authentic and mineral Cornas, with a peppery expression, softened texture and a long saline, earthy finish.

Expression of the 2002 vintage

The 2002 vintage in the Northern Rhône was a difficult year, producing wines that are often lighter, fresher and more irregular than the great solar vintages. From the best growers, however, this year can now reveal subtle, evolved and delicate profiles, centred more on tertiary notes, spice, freshness and minerality than on fruit power.

Today, this Cornas 2002 from Thierry Allemand should be approached as a mature and sensitive wine, highly dependent on provenance, fill level and storage conditions. Gentle aeration is preferable to long decanting, in order to preserve its balance and delicacy. A fine bottle can offer a moving expression of old Syrah: black pepper, olive, smoke, leather, graphite, forest floor, damp earth and melted black fruit.

In summary: a mature, rare and profoundly authentic Cornas 2002, driven by the artisanal signature of Thierry Allemand, the granite identity of Cornas and a peppery, smoky and mineral tertiary evolution.

Dominant aromas: blackberry, cassis, black plum, Morello cherry, black pepper, faded violet, black olive, smoked bacon, fine leather, graphite, forest floor, damp earth, liquorice and a long mineral finish.
