Châteauneuf-du-Pape Marie Beurrier 2014 — Henri Bonneau
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Marie Beurrier 2014 from Domaine Henri Bonneau, offered here in magnum, expresses one of the estate’s finest and most immediately graceful facets. In a fresh and delicate vintage for the Southern Rhône, the wine does not seek solar exuberance, but rather elegance, texture and a spicy expression of Grenache.
At Henri Bonneau, the Marie Beurrier cuvée holds a special place: less mythical than Réserve des Célestins, it can show more immediate harmony, with a velvety mouthfeel, great aromatic finesse and southern depth without excess. The 2014 vintage reinforces this reading, favouring freshness, integrated acidity, fine tannins and an almost Burgundian silhouette.
A Châteauneuf-du-Pape of finesse and nuance, driven by spice, red fruit, garrigue and a supple texture. The 2014 is less concentrated than the great warm vintages, but it seduces through balance, naturalness, freshness and its graceful expression of the estate’s artisanal style.
Terroir: La Crau, galets roulés and clay depth
Domaine Henri Bonneau works very small holdings on the great terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, notably La Crau and Grand Pierre. La Crau is one of the appellation’s most emblematic sectors, marked by its galets roulés and deep clay soils. The rounded stones capture daytime heat and release it slowly, while the clays bring water reserve, foundation and complexity.
In Marie Beurrier 2014, this terroir expresses itself with more restraint than power. Grenache gives a supple texture, ripe red fruit, sweet spices and a touch of garrigue. The freshness of the vintage refines the whole, highlighting the fineness of grain, the spicy length and the wine’s natural balance.
Terroir expression: ripe Grenache, galets roulés, red clays, garrigue, fine spices, freshness and depth without heaviness.
Estate signature: traditional vinification, long ageing, melted texture and patient selection of the cuvées after ageing.
Tasting notes
Appearance: rather light to medium ruby, with a natural transparency that recalls the finesse of Grenache in a fresh vintage. Evolution in magnum should remain slow, with a colour still bright and only gently marked by age.
Nose: delicate, spicy and already complex, with red cherry, ripe strawberry, discreet black fruits, garrigue, soft pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, fine leather and a floral touch. The profile remains more airy than massive, with an almost Burgundian elegance in its aromatic texture.
Palate: medium-bodied, supple and harmonious, with moderate richness, well-integrated acidity and fine tannins. The wine offers a velvety texture, spiced red fruit, a sensation of freshness and a good-length finish on spice, garrigue and a light leather note. The whole favours balance and noble drinkability rather than concentration.
Fruit: red cherry, ripe strawberry, delicate black fruits, fresh plum.
Spice and garrigue: soft pepper, dried herbs, thyme, liquorice, Provençal spices.
Evolution: fine leather, light forest floor, faded floral notes, a touch of blond tobacco.
Overall impression: fine, fresh and spicy, with a velvety texture and moderate power.
Expression of the 2014 vintage
The 2014 vintage was a cooler and more delicate year in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. At Henri Bonneau, it produced a wine of finesse, spice and freshness rather than power. Critical notes highlight its elegant style, Burgundian-like texture, medium richness, integrated acidity and fine tannins.
In magnum, Marie Beurrier 2014 should preserve its brightness and balance for longer. It can already be enjoyed for its charm, suppleness and emerging aromatic complexity, while the 1.5-litre format still allows harmonious evolution towards more leather, forest floor, soft tobacco, melted spice and dried garrigue.
In summary: a refined, fresh, spicy and velvety Marie Beurrier, carried by the grace of Grenache in a less solar vintage.
Dominant aromas: red cherry, ripe strawberry, black fruits, garrigue, soft pepper, liquorice, dried herbs, fine leather and Provençal spices.
