In Ampuis, at the heart of Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Stéphane Ogier embodies a modern, precise and refined vision of the Northern Rhône, combining silky Syrah, meticulous parcel-by-parcel work and elegant Condrieu whites.
Domaine Stéphane Ogier — Finesse as a signature
Based in Ampuis, at the heart of the legendary Côte-Rôtie, Domaine Stéphane Ogier has become one of the leading contemporary names of the Northern Rhône. Since returning to the family estate in the early 2000s, Stéphane Ogier has developed a remarkably pure approach, built on precision, elegance and the careful expression of each site.
The estate works a mosaic of parcels, mainly in Côte-Rôtie, but also in Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Collines Rhodaniennes and other Rhône expressions. The wines stand out for their silky texture, freshness, aromatic brightness and rare ability to combine intensity with delicacy.
The spirit of the estate
Stéphane Ogier represents a generation of Rhône winemakers that is both precise, free-thinking and deeply attached to the region’s historic slopes. His style favours perfectly judged ripeness, measured extraction and a demanding parcel-by-parcel approach, producing wines that are expressive, refined and beautifully balanced.
Terroir and winemaking
In Côte-Rôtie, the estate works several lieux-dits and parcels on the steep slopes of Ampuis. This diversity allows for nuanced expressions of Syrah: some more floral and graceful, others deeper, spicier and more structured. The approach is resolutely parcel-driven, with each origin harvested and vinified separately in order to preserve its identity.
Viticulture is based on meticulous work in the vineyard, manual harvesting, careful sorting and a constant search for balance. Vinification remains gentle, with spontaneous fermentations, controlled macerations and fine extraction, preserving the energy of the fruit and the nobility of the tannins.
Ageing is often long and takes place in oak barrels, with a measured use of new wood. The aim is never demonstration, but length, precision and transparency. In white wines, particularly in Condrieu, Viognier retains its natural generosity while gaining tension, freshness and mineral relief.
Emblematic cuvées
Côte-Rôtie “Mon Village” captures the estate’s spirit in a fluid, floral and precise expression, marked by pure Syrah fruit and a delicately silky texture.
Côte-Rôtie “La Belle Hélène” is a great age-worthy cuvée from old vines, offering depth, intensity, noble tannins and remarkable persistence.
Côte-Rôtie “Lancement” represents one of the estate’s most refined single-site expressions, with a floral, vertical and beautifully extended profile.
Condrieu reveals a generous, fragrant and balanced Viognier, combining apricot, white flowers, velvety texture and a fresh finish.
Le Temps est Venu offers a more immediate introduction to the Ogier style, with a juicy, digestible and vibrant wine driven by fruit, freshness and pleasure.
Cellaring and food pairings
The great Côte-Rôtie wines of Domaine Stéphane Ogier can evolve gracefully for many years, developing notes of faded violet, sweet spices, fine leather, graphite and preserved dark fruit. The more accessible cuvées are best enjoyed younger, for their bright fruit and immediate finesse. At the table, the reds pair beautifully with lamb, pigeon, duck, roasted meats, mushrooms and delicately spiced dishes. Condrieu wines are excellent with noble fish, creamy poultry, shellfish and lightly aromatic cuisine.
