Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2011 — Château Rayas

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2011 from Château Rayas is one of the rarest and most singular white wines of the southern Rhône. Made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette, it expresses a highly distinctive vision of white Châteauneuf-du-Pape: powerful, concentrated and deeply textured, yet carried by inner tension and remarkable ageing potential.

Terroir: Rayas, rarity and depth in southern Rhône white wine

Château Rayas holds a unique place in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with an immediately recognisable style based on purity, aromatic singularity and a deeply personal expression of terroir. The estate’s white wine, produced in very limited quantities, offers a rare interpretation of the appellation, far removed from whites that are merely sun-filled or opulent.

Produced from Grenache Blanc and Clairette, then aged for around nine months in barrel, this wine combines power, concentration and structure. The 2011 vintage gives a serious and dense expression, still marked by a certain restraint in its youth, but built to evolve with complexity in bottle.

Tasting notes

Appearance: sustained golden yellow, brilliant, with slightly amber reflections that reveal the wine’s evolution and richness of texture.

Nose: deep and still slightly restrained, with honey, wax, ripe yellow fruit, candied citrus, sweet spices, dried herbs and a touch of noble reduction. With aeration, nuances of almond, warm stone, dried flowers and fine smoke may appear.

Palate: broad, dense and tightly woven, with serious substance, powerful texture and fine inner tension. The wine is concentrated, spicy and structured, with a long, deep and still reserved finish that suggests complex evolution in bottle.

Expert review

17.5+/20 — Jancis Robinson

Jancis Robinson describes the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2011 from Château Rayas as a rare white wine made in equal parts from Grenache Blanc and Clairette. Tasted before bottling, the wine was still showing a certain reduction, yet already revealed serious substance, with notes of honey and a broad, spicy and very tight palate. Her comment highlights a wine that was still closed at that stage, dense and tense, with a structure suggesting fine evolution in bottle.

Expression of the 2011 vintage

The 2011 vintage gives this white Rayas a powerful, complete and concentrated expression, still structured by a tight framework. With time, the wine should develop more complex nuances of fine honey, wax, sweet spices, dried fruit, almond, candied citrus, warm stone and lightly smoky notes, while retaining the singular depth of great white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

In summary: a rare and profound Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2011 from Château Rayas, made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette, barrel-aged and marked by powerful substance, great concentration and significant ageing potential.

Food pairings: creamy poultry, roasted lobster, scallops, turbot, morel risotto, veal with mushrooms, cuisine with gentle spices, aged Comté or mature hard cheeses.
