Château Lafite Rothschild 1997 — Pauillac First Growth

This Château Lafite Rothschild 1997 is a mature Pauillac from an often underestimated vintage, yet one that can offer considerable charm today when well preserved. Less built for eternity than the great classical years, it expresses a more accessible and velvety side of Lafite: cassis, cedar, pencil lead, minerals, black fruits, noble wood, sweet spices and a supple texture.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the great symbols of Pauillac. In 1997, only a strict selection of the vintage entered the Grand Vin, with limited production. The result is a Lafite that is less austere than some long-ageing vintages, more open, perfumed and caressing, while still preserving the finesse, minerality and aristocratic restraint of the château.

The spirit of the wine

A mature Lafite, supple, charming and highly classical in its aromatic expression. The 1997 seduces through its perfume of cedar, cassis, pencil lead, minerals and black fruits, with a medium-bodied palate that is more velvety than massive. It is a refined pleasure wine, to be appreciated for its finesse, balance and patina rather than for monumental power.

Terroir: Lafite’s deep gravel and the finesse of Pauillac

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in northern Pauillac, close to Saint-Estèphe and the Gironde estuary. The vineyard lies on great rises of fine, deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sands, with limestone, clay or marl subsoils depending on the sector. These poor, well-draining and well-exposed soils are particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety of the Grand Vin.

In the 1997, this terroir is expressed in a less severe way than in the most tannic vintages, but remains very clear: cassis, black fruits, cedar, pencil lead, graphite, minerals and freshness. The gravel brings line and persistence, while the softer climate of the year gives a rounder, more velvety and more readily accessible palate.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cassis, black fruits, cedar, pencil lead, graphite, minerals, freshness and velvety texture.

Lafite signature: aristocratic restraint, aromatic finesse, polished tannins, minerality, elegance and balance rather than demonstrative power.

Tasting notes

Appearance: dark ruby to evolved garnet, with still respectable density in well-preserved bottles. Brick reflections are beginning to mark the rim, but the wine can retain interesting visual depth thanks to the strict selection for the Grand Vin.

Nose: soft, expansive and classical, with cedar, cassis, black fruits, pencil lead, minerals, blackberry, exotic woods, blond tobacco and sweet spices. With aeration, notes of cigar box, fine leather, forest floor, light coffee, nougat and graphite can complete the bouquet.

Palate: medium-bodied, supple, velvety and already mature, with a mid-palate that is rounder than deep. The black fruit remains present, supported by cedar, pencil lead, minerals and a softened tannic frame. The finish is elegant, fresh, harmonious and persistent, marked more by charm and finesse than by power or severity.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, dark berries, ripe and accessible fruit.

Evolution: cedar, blond tobacco, cigar box, fine leather, forest floor, light coffee, nougat.

Terroir: pencil lead, graphite, minerals, noble woods, sweet spices, polished tannins and elegant finish.

Overall impression: mature, supple, refined and accessible Lafite, more charming than monumental.

Expression of the 1997 vintage

The 1997 vintage in Bordeaux does not have the reputation of the great ageing years, but it produced more accessible wines, often early-maturing and now fully mature. At Lafite, severe selection preserved fruit purity and terroir finesse, producing a wine that is more open, more velvety and more immediately seductive than strongly tannic vintages.

Today, Château Lafite Rothschild 1997 should be appreciated from the perspective of maturity. The best bottles still offer a fine perfume of cedar, cassis, pencil lead and minerals, with a supple and harmonious palate. It should be opened carefully, tasted immediately, then given moderate aeration in order to preserve its balance and delicacy.

In summary: a mature, elegant and velvety Château Lafite Rothschild 1997, less monumental than the great ageing vintages but highly seductive through its finesse, perfume and accessibility.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, cedar, pencil lead, graphite, minerals, blond tobacco, noble woods, sweet spices, fine leather and a harmonious finish.
