Château Mouton Rothschild 1991
A collector’s Pauillac: tertiary elegance, blond tobacco and classical nobility
Terroir
Born from the great gravel rises of Pauillac, Château Mouton Rothschild 1991 expresses one of the Médoc’s most emblematic terroirs. The vines draw depth and complexity from poor, deep and perfectly draining soils composed of gravel, sand, clay and limestone. This terroir favours the slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in the blend, giving the wine its noble structure, cassis character, cedar, graphite notes and natural ageing capacity. In the delicate 1991 vintage, marked by challenging conditions in Bordeaux, Mouton Rothschild offers an expression of finesse rather than power, carried by the nobility of its origin and the precision of its selection.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Evolved, refined and unmistakably Pauillac in character, the nose opens with aromas of ripe cassis, blond tobacco, cedar and cigar box, complemented by nuances of fine leather, undergrowth, black tea, sweet spices and pencil lead. With aeration, the wine may reveal a delicate floral touch, almost jasmine-like, together with a subtle roasted note.
Palate & Finish:
Medium-bodied, supple and now fully mature, the palate is driven more by tertiary finesse than by concentration. The tannins, now largely resolved but sometimes slightly dry depending on the condition of the bottle, frame an elegant core of softened black fruit, tobacco, cedar and spices. The finish is classical, fresh and delicately oaky, lingering on graphite, noble leather and evolved cassis. A bottle to be opened today with care, valued for its old-Pauillac charm and collector’s appeal.
