Château Lafite Rothschild — First Growth of Pauillac

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the greatest icons of the Médoc and one of the most respected names in Bordeaux. Located in Pauillac, it embodies a vision of fine wine built on the nobility of Cabernet Sauvignon, the depth of Médoc gravel soils, precision of detail and an almost timeless elegance.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild holds a unique place in the history of Bordeaux fine wines. Its style, more aristocratic than demonstrative, is admired for its purity, freshness, refined tannins and legendary ability to age for decades with remarkable grace.

The spirit of the château

Château Lafite Rothschild expresses Pauillac in its noblest, purest and most finely chiselled form. The estate never seeks immediate effect: it favours precision, length, freshness and the fine-grained texture that distinguishes the greatest age-worthy wines.

History and identity of Château Lafite Rothschild

The history of Lafite is inseparable from that of the great growths of the Médoc. Already recognised well before the 1855 Classification, the château gradually established itself as one of Europe’s most admired wines, sought after for its finesse, consistency and rare sense of Bordeaux distinction.

In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired the estate, opening a new chapter in the château’s history. Since then, Lafite has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite, which has gradually consolidated its status as a global icon while preserving its identity: rigour, discretion, elegance and exceptional longevity.

Today, Château Lafite Rothschild remains associated with a demanding vision of fine wine. Under the leadership of Saskia de Rothschild and with the technical precision of Éric Kohler, the estate continues in-depth work on the vineyard, agroecology, refined extractions and adaptation to climate change, without compromising the singular character of the Lafite style.

A First Growth of unique prestige

The 1855 Classification placed Château Lafite Rothschild at the summit of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Its rank as a First Growth reflects the château’s historical reputation, the consistency of its wines and their exceptional capacity for long ageing.

Lafite is often regarded as one of the most refined of the great Pauillac wines. Where some crus impress through power or immediate richness, Lafite fascinates through restraint, silent depth, aromatic precision and a sense of nobility that becomes fully apparent with time.

Terroir: the great gravel soils of Pauillac

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild covers approximately 110 to 112 hectares on the deep gravel ridges of northern Pauillac. These Garonne gravel soils, mixed in certain sectors with sand and clay, provide remarkable natural drainage and allow the vines to root deeply.

This terroir gives rise to wines of great verticality, driven by Cabernet Sauvignon. Natural freshness, a long-lined structure, notes of graphite, cedar and cassis, as well as refined tannins, are at the heart of the château’s identity.

Terroir expression: Pauillac, deep gravel soils, Cabernet Sauvignon, natural drainage, freshness, graphite, cedar, cassis, violet, blond tobacco and long-lined structure.

Lafite signature: aromatic purity, extreme finesse, silky tannins, noble freshness, Médoc elegance, airy length and exceptional ageing potential.

Grape varieties and vineyard precision

Lafite’s vineyard reflects the classic identity of Pauillac, with a clear dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the Grand Vin, bringing structure, freshness, depth and ageing capacity.

Work in the vineyard is based on close observation of each parcel, rigorous grape selection and a constant search for balance. The goal is not to produce a massive wine, but to preserve texture finesse, fruit purity and the natural tension that characterise the finest bottles of Lafite.

Viticulture: precision, observation and ecological transition

The estate continues to work carefully on its viticulture, with growing attention to agroecological practices and biodiversity. Vineyard management aims to better understand each parcel, preserve natural balances and adapt practices to the conditions of each vintage.

This approach remains faithful to the Lafite style: seeking just the right level of ripeness, preserving freshness, avoiding over-concentration and maintaining the extremely fine tannin texture that allows the wine to age with rare elegance.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification is carried out with great precision, respecting each lot and each parcel origin. Depending on the vintage, fermentations may take place in wood, stainless steel or cement vats, with measured extractions designed to preserve fruit purity and tannin delicacy.

The Grand Vin is generally aged in French oak barrels for several months, with a significant proportion of new oak. The aim is never to mark the wine, but to support its structure, polish its texture and allow it gradually to develop aromatic depth.

Estate profile

Structure: long-lined, precise, fresh, deep and built for very long ageing.

Aromatic expression: cassis, precise black fruit, violet, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine spices and noble tertiary notes.

Texture: silky, finely chiselled and elegant, with an exceptionally refined tannic frame.

Personality: an aristocratic, deep, discreet and refined Pauillac whose greatness is fully revealed with time.

Style of the wines

The style of Château Lafite Rothschild is defined by immediately recognisable elegance. Less opulent than certain great Pauillac wines, Lafite favours finesse, the purity of Cabernet Sauvignon, aromatic freshness and an extremely polished tannic structure.

In great vintages, the wine evolves over several decades, developing nuances of cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, truffle, cigar box, fine leather and noble undergrowth. Even with age, the finest bottles retain freshness, tension and length, all of which contribute to the legend of the estate.

Emblematic cuvées

Château Lafite Rothschild: the estate’s Grand Vin and one of the greatest symbols of Pauillac. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with a long-lined structure, aromas of cassis, cedar, violet, graphite and a sovereign finish, it represents the noblest, deepest and most enduring expression of the Lafite terroir.

Carruades de Lafite: the château’s historic second wine, produced from specific parcels and selections. More accessible in its youth than the Grand Vin, it retains the purity, precision and elegance characteristic of Lafite.

Anseillan: a cuvée launched with the 2018 vintage and produced from the Lafite vineyard. It offers a more immediate reading of the château’s universe, while remaining closely linked to its terroir and to the spirit of Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite.

Great vintages and longevity

Château Lafite Rothschild belongs to the very small circle of wines capable of evolving for several decades. The greatest years combine discreet power, freshness, tannic precision and aromatic depth, with a unique ability to gain complexity without losing balance.

Among the most sought-after historical and modern vintages are 1953, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020. Depending on storage conditions, certain bottles can achieve exceptional longevity while retaining the fine-grained texture and freshness that define the Lafite style.
