Château Lafite Rothschild 1993 — Pauillac First Growth

This Château Lafite Rothschild 1993, offered here in double magnum 3 L, is a mature Pauillac from a classical vintage, shaped more by finesse, restraint and straightness than by opulence. In the best bottles, it expresses Lafite’s aristocratic style: cassis, black fruits, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather, forest floor, minerals, discreet floral notes and an elegant, fresh and slightly austere finish.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild remains one of the great symbols of Pauillac. The 1993 vintage was less solar and less powerful than the great ageing years, yet Lafite produced a serious, subtle and balanced wine, often described as elegant, polished and restrained. The double magnum format offers a major advantage: slower evolution, better preservation of freshness and greater aromatic stability.

The spirit of the wine

A mature Lafite, classical, fine and measured, built more on balance and texture than on power. The 1993 shows a discreet but noble expression of Cabernet Sauvignon: restrained black fruit, cedar, tobacco, graphite, fine leather, delicate vegetal notes, fresh acidity and polished tannins, with a straight and persistent finish.

Terroir: Lafite’s deep gravel and the nobility of Pauillac

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in northern Pauillac, close to Saint-Estèphe and the Gironde estuary. The vineyard rests on great rises of fine, deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sands, with limestone and marl subsoils depending on the sector. These poor, well-draining and well-exposed soils are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety of the Grand Vin.

In a vintage such as 1993, this terroir does not give a massive wine, but an expression of line, freshness and precision. The gravel brings tension, graphite, cedar and persistence; the fine clays and cooler subsoil contribute balance; the estuary moderates climatic excesses. The result is a slender, subtle, mineral Lafite, very faithful to its identity.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cassis, black fruits, cedar, graphite, tobacco, minerals, freshness and elegant tannic structure.

Lafite signature: aristocratic restraint, aromatic finesse, polished tannins, freshness, minerality and length rather than demonstrative power.

Tasting notes

Appearance: dark ruby to evolved garnet, with intensity still sustained in well-preserved large formats. Brick reflections are beginning to appear at the rim, but the double magnum can preserve greater depth, brightness and visual freshness than a standard bottle.

Nose: fine, classical and gradually opening, with cassis, blackberry, black fruits, cedar, blond tobacco, cigar box, graphite, minerals, fine leather and forest floor. Depending on storage, nuances of violet, black olive, dark coffee, dry leaf, sweet spices and a noble vegetal touch may appear.

Palate: medium-bodied, straight, elegant and relatively austere, with fine freshness and polished but still structuring tannins. The black fruit remains present but restrained, supported by cedar, tobacco, fine earth, graphite and spice. The finish is long for the vintage, fresh, slightly dry, mineral and very classical in balance.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, dark berries, ripe but discreet fruit.

Evolution: cedar, blond tobacco, cigar box, fine leather, forest floor, dry leaf, dark coffee.

Terroir: graphite, minerals, black olive, sweet spices, freshness, polished tannins and straight finish.

Overall impression: mature, classical, subtle and elegant Lafite, marked more by nobility and restraint than by power.

Expression of the 1993 vintage

The 1993 vintage in Bordeaux was uneven, with irregular weather and less favourable conditions than the great classical years. At Lafite, the harvest took place under often cloudy skies, alternating rain and sunshine, before a brighter finish. The fermentations preserved good tannic concentration, producing a wine that is fine, balanced and subtle rather than a massive Pauillac.

Today, Château Lafite Rothschild 1993 should be tasted with close attention to provenance and storage condition. In double magnum, it can offer very fine poise, preserved freshness and more harmonious evolution. It should be opened carefully, tasted immediately, then given measured aeration in order to preserve its delicate fruit, texture and aromatic nobility.

In summary: a mature, elegant and classical Château Lafite Rothschild 1993, enhanced by the double magnum format, to be appreciated for its finesse, freshness and aristocratic restraint.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, cedar, tobacco, cigar box, graphite, minerals, fine leather, forest floor, black olive, sweet spices and a fresh mineral finish.
